Friday Harbor 4- North County Christian 3

posted 09/27/2006
It is a challenge for a young team to stay focused for 80 minutes. On a sparkling Monday afternoon Friday Harbor defeated North County Christian 4-3 in a game that was not remotely as close as the score would lead one to believe. The Lady Wolverines played smartly for most of the opening session, taking a 2-0 lead on two goals by Whitney Porter (both assisted by Shelby Ness).

There were other opportunities to extend that lead but the team failed to capitalize. Somnolence set in and two goals were yielded late in the period. Thus it was disappointingly level at 2-2 at the half.

The second session began with renewed vigor. The Wolverines were rewarded by two gems early on: Porter completed her hat trick from Jenny Guard and Lauren Hoover netted the other off a Ness rebound to take it to 4-2.

A spell of lethargy once again took hold, and a miscommunication allowed the visitors to finish off a nice far post goal to bring it to 4-3 at about 65 minutes. Friday Harbor then reawakened, and controlled the rest of the match with fine ball movement and intelligent play.

Kudos to Sammy Michael at midfield and Amanda Root on defense, as well as to Lola Elford in her first start in goal.

The Lady Wolverines now sit at 5 and 2, which reflects their solid play to date. The next two matches against La Conner and Meridian will be the real tests of how far they have come.
