The two best teams met again on Thursday afternoon, with Friday Harbor girls soccer team coming up a bit short, losing 0-2 to rivals La Conner. The outcome was, of course, disappointing but not a disappointment. Careful analysis of the game reveals that the Lady Wolverines dominated all aspects of play except for the final tally.

In the first half, the girls demonstrated fine ball control and the highest level of aggressive play yet seen this season. This was without doubt the technically finest game to date. However, their inability to capitalize on their advantage was ominous. There was no let down as the second half began much as the first had ended, with Friday Harbor coming tantalizingly close but still unable to finish.

Midway through the session, a weak goal was yielded followed shortly thereafter by an outside strike that completed La Conner's scoring. Still, the Wolverines continued to press, giving a full 80 minutes of play. Opportunities were present right up until time, but finding the back of the net unfortunately proved to be elusive.

Ingrid Carlson and Alex MacDonald featured well, as did Alinson Nash. Beth Ware continues to impress, and Charlotte Guard's play shows that she unquestionably is coming of age in this sport.

The first half of the season is now complete, with the ladies holding a record of 5-3 (4-2 in league play) and on target for a return to the playoffs. The players have responded enthusiastically to a demanding coaching program, and all are on a steep learning curve. With freshmen and sophomores comprising 50% of the team, this is a fine start that bodes well for the remainder of this fall and for years to come.
