2A Meridian beats Wolverine soccer team 8-3

You only get better playing those better than you. On Saturday, September 30th, the Lady Wolverines played host to Meridian High from Bellingham, the 2A powerhouse who finished fourth in the State in 2005.

What took place seemed to be two games. Friday Harbor played in a complete fog for the first 20 minutes, allowing Meridian to take an embarrassingly easy 4-0 lead.

It took the insertion of Hanna Burke and Alex MacDonald into the lineup to rouse the somnolent Wolverines. For the remainder of the match, they regained their form and played highly competitive soccer.

Late in the half, Whitney Porter found her fire, went on a long run down the right flank, and fired home from 35 yards. That really got things going and the Wolverines were by far the more aggressive team for the remainder of the session.

Meridian came out sharply for the opening moments of the second half and scored in the first minute. Rather than rattle Friday Harbor, this really inspired their play, leading to their second, and by far the prettiest goal of the match. Again, Whitney Porter took the ball down the right flank, crossed for the end line to Jenny Guard at the far post for the tap in. This was especially gratifying as this play was practiced repeatedly only the day before.

Even though their opponents found the back of the net several more times, the girls overall level of play remained high for the remainder of the match. Late in the session, a Meridian forward broke in on goal alone only to be stifled by a spectacular save by Lola Elford. Others who contributed were Kara Dunn, Lauren Zander, and Ingrid Carlson.

This game was an opportunity to play at a higher level, to show that these girls can play at this level, and to see what must be learned to belong at that level.
