Shelby Ness scores with 20 seconds left in the match against La Conner.

Yogi really was right: it was déjà vu all over again. Friday Harbor hosted the Concrete Lions on the afternoon of October 10, 2006. Once again, this version of the "Cardiac Kids" was clearly the better team. Once again, they allowed Concrete to stay in the match, and once again it was the combination of Whitney Porter and Shelby Ness that saved the day in the dying moments of the match. But more of that below.

The early going was a mixture of Wolverine uncertainty and dominance. The defense moved up smartly to support the midfield and forwards, but, despite numerous shots, the match remained scoreless for through the first half of the period. Rarely were the Lions able to penetrate into the Friday Harbor end. At about the 25th minute, Beth Ware struck a splendid free kick from about 35 yards that was finished in textbook fashion by Shelby Ness at the far post. The Wolverines had a number of chances in the waning minutes of the half but failed to score. So, it went to the interval 1-0 Friday Harbor.

The second half began with a spirited attack by Friday Harbor, with posts and crossbars being struck, but no goals. A sequence of defensive lapses allowed Concrete to penetrate deep into the Wolverines territory for the only time in the match. Hannah Snow made a superb first save, but the Wolverines inability to clear the area allowed the Lions to knot the score at 1-1 at the 57th minute.

The remainder of the match featured a relentless Friday Harbor attack matched with a number of missed opportunities to put the game away. It was obvious that the opponents were playing for the tie and it seemed that we surely were headed for yet another overtime. Moments from time, Whitney Porter served Shelby Ness a delightful ball right at the Concrete six yard line. Ness made no mistake, again finding the back of the net at 79:40. The defense held firm in the dying second to preserve the win. Another thriller, another victory. Final score: Friday Harbor 2- Concrete 1.
