Wolverine soccer beats North County Christian 3-1

The Lady Wolverines made their second expedition to the Mount Lake Terrace ground, the home of North County Christian. Our girls had won the prior match there (as well as at home) but were taken to overtime by the short-handed Lions on September 7th . This game had many similarities to the first. The opponents were again short handed, and again Friday Harbor out shot that adversary by an absurd margin of 34 to 3. And again, that inability to finish kept the match close until the very end.

For the first few minutes, Friday Harbor was back on its collective heels as the Lions attacked. Soon however, most of the play shifted to the other end of the field. A precise cross by Sammy Michael at left midfield found Whitney Porter at the penalty spot, and she casually finished the play. 1-0 Friday Harbor after 12 minutes. Tentative play by the Wolverines allowed North County star Nikki Brekka free space at the touch line 25 yards from goal and she knotted the score at the 19 minute mark.

Friday Harbor retook the lead shortly thereafter. The defense elegantly advanced the ball into the box, whereupon Shelby Ness crossed the ball to a rapidly closing Jenny Guard who made no mistake to take the score to 2-1. The ball remained in the North County end for the remainder of the period with numerous shots on goal but no further scoring.

The second half was all Friday Harbor, which limited the Lions to two weak shots while continuing to attack relentlessly. Beth Ware appeared to have scored on a cannon shot from 40 yards but allegedly did not. Ness had a goal disallowed on a phantom offside.

It was not until the closing moments that the game was finally decided. In the 79th minute, Ness again presented a perfect pass to Jenny Guard who touched it in over the helpless goalkeeper.

Amanda Root gave a strong 80 minutes at right defender. Kara Dunn, Ingrid Carlson, and Hanna Burke played fine supporting roles. Hannah Snow continues to maintain the hot hand in goal.

Final score: Friday Harbor 3 North County Christian 1. The Lady Wolverine's record now stands at 8 and 4 heading into the home stretch and preparation for playoffs.
