Wolverine girls soccer beats Nooksack 3-2Story by Mark Fishaut posted 10/21/2006 The first few minutes were all Friday Harbor, capped by a terrific solo effort by Jenny Guard who scored from close range in the 6th minute. There were numerous other chances through the next 20 minutes but nothing came of it. And, as has repeatedly been the case this season, lost opportunities give opponents confidence, and from confidence come goals. Today was no exception as the Pioneers stole two late in the period: one came off a rare Snow mistake in goal, and the other off a cleverly taken free kick shortly before the end of the period. Score at the interval: Nooksaak 2- Friday Harbor 1. The team came off the field with their heads down and your reporter just short of irate. They were sharply reminded that they were capable of much more, and in the second half, they proved it. Whitney Porter and Shelby Ness both grew enormously in that 40 minutes with the former emerging as a leader an the latter discovering her passion for the game. At 55 minutes, the Porter to Ness combination knotted the score at 2-2. Five minutes later, in a forest of players in the six, Ness again fired home another winning goal. Nooksaak did not give up, but stout defense from Snow, Ware, and Fyrquist sealed the win. A well earned victory, fully deserving of praise was just what the Wolverines needed in the drive to complete a successful season. The emergence of new leaders is crucial to a good team's growth. The challenge now is to put together the performances of the first half of the 10/17 game and the second half of this 10/18 game for a full 80 minutes of play. |
