Lady Wolverines soccer team wraps up season

posted 10/29/2006 The difference between the two teams came down to the Lyncs finding a way to capitalize on their few opportunities while Friday Harbor could not. The two teams were a contrast in styles of play. Lynden Christian, particularly in the midfield, had an advantage in technique and finesse that was largely neutralized by the Wolverine's overall physicality and passion. To say that this was the most intense and skillful play out of our girls your reporter has witnessed in his three years associated with this team would be an understatement. Ironically, Lynden Christian scored the first goal in the 11th minute on a fine crossing play that had been Friday Harbor's late season trademark. It was a laudable effort for which no one could be faulted. The remainder of the half featured an ebb and flow for both teams with neither giving away a thing. Score at the interval: Lynden Christian 1- Friday Harbor 0. The second half was more of the same, with both teams having chances and being denied by errant shots, good defense, and solid goal keeping at both ends of the pitch. In a one goal match, as the clock ticks away, the team that is behind must press to level the score, giving opportunities to their opponents. This proved to be the case, as goals were yielded in the 75th and 76th minutes. Still, the team pressed on bravely until the final whistle. Tears of disappointment were rightfully shed, as were those shed by the seniors in the realization that this was their final match. Still, all deported themselves with the class and dignity that has been the hallmark of this squad. In other match reports, individual stars have been noted. Not today: there was but one star- the whole team. They have brought their football (yes, it really is football!) to a level of quality and passion that guarantees a bright future for this program and for them as women.
