Lehr and McNairy to make rare trip to state tennis tourney

Josh Lehr and Keller McNairy will be playing tennis the last week of the season -- a feat a Friday Harbor tennis player has not accomplished in more than 10 years.

"I'm very excited," McNairy said. "It's my senior year, so it's my last chance to do something at state."

"Keller has been talking about state for four years," said Lehr, a sophomore who started with the teams as a manager three years ago. "It's been our biggest goal throughout these years,"

Lehr and McNairy finished second in Quad-District and earned a trip to the Class 1B/2B/1A State Tournament in Yakima Friday and Saturday, May 25-26.

"We'll do some last-minute adjustments and I think we'll be ready," McNairy said.

Lehr and McNairy finished first at the District 1 Tournament in October and didn't see prep action until Quad-District. Teams from the other three districts played up to 20 prep matches this spring. To keep pace, especially with the Seattle-area teams who dominate the Quad-District, the Friday Harbor team went off island to an indoor facility when possible. They played in the Fairgrounds Main Building. As the weather improved they practiced at the high school courts.

"After Keller finished basketball we were pretty devoted," Lehr said. "We hit the court pretty hard."

That dedication paid off at Quad-District for Lehr and McNairy who rebounded from slow starts in their first two matches.

King and King won the first set of the tourney opener 7-5. Barnes and assistant coach Jim McNairy, Keller's father, "told us to have confidence in our game, stay calm … play like you know you can," the young McNairy said. The Friday Harbor players responded by winning the next two sets 6-2, 6-2.

University Prep's Dawson and Wahl won a semifinal match with Lehr and McNairy 6-4. The Wolverines again rebounded after a pep talk from their coaches, winning 7-5 and 6-3.

Lehr and McNairy probably faced the best Class 1A doubles team in the state in the Tri-District championship. University Prep's LeVeque and Corbit won 6-1, 6-1.

In other Quad-District action, Overlake's Lum defeated Friday Harbor's Peter Duggins 6-3, 6-1 in the first round. Overlake's Wilkes beat Duggins 6-0, 7-6 (7-5).

Coupeville's No. 2 team eliminated Friday Harbor's Pablo Lopez and Zach Milkis 6-4, 6-2 in a Tri-District feeder match.
