Fourth-quarter surge shoots Orcas girls past Friday Harbor

posted 01/21/2007
Orcas Island girls basketball out-scored Friday Harbor 14-6 in the fourth quarter of a 49-37 win Saturday, January 20.

"The key to winning that game was hustle… and good defense," said Orcas coach Terry Moran-Hodge.

"We played a good first half but match the intensity of Orcas in the second half," said Friday Harbor coach Erik Jangard. "They must have had at least 25 offensive rebounds and that's just unacceptable."

The Vikings led 25-22 at the half and stretched the lead to 8 points at the start of the third quarter. Friday Harbor trimmed the lead to 35-31 at the start of the fourth quarter.

Orcas junior Cara Peacock sparked the Vikings offense in the final period, scoring 7 of her game-high 13 points. Jessica McClary also scored 13 for the Vikings.

Lanie Padbury and Anika Thomas pitched in 6 apiece for the Vikings. Melissa Moran-Hodge contributed 5 and Annie Kucklick scored 4.

Amanda Root paced the Wolverines with 10 points. Sami Gibson and Kiersten Radden each scored 6. Sarah Heeren had 5. Megan Brown and Caitlin Greenway chipped in 4 apiece and Brooke Jangard contributed 2.
