Split end Matt Rothlisberger and quarterback Cole Franklin combined for all of Friday Harbor's scoring as Friday Harbor topped Orcas Island 26-14 Friday, Sept. 1, 2006. The Wolverines keep the Island Cup trophy for a third consecutive year.

"Cole just put it in the right spot," Rothlisberger said. "It was a fun game -- lots of running and lots of catching."

"We had some good, crisp play on both sides of the ball," said Friday Harbor coach Richard Ledford.

"Our guys played hard," said Orcas coach Dennis Dahl. "The effort was there but we had some mental breakdowns."

"Orcas is a good, all-around team," Franklin said. "It was a good game to start out with."

Rothlisberger, who played soccer last fall instead of football, pulled in touchdown passes of 20, 25, 33 and 34 yards. He also caught a pass for a 2-point conversion. Rothlisberger finished with 13 receptions for 202 yards.

"Matt had a break-out game," said Ledford said.

Franklin completed 17 of 23 pass attempts for 246 yards.

"Cole was hurt and for a week has practiced very little," Ledford said. "He had an excellent, excellent game".

Brock McNairy hauled in four Franklin passes for 44 yards.

The Wolverines rushed for 80 yards. Austin Scheffer gained 38 yards on 9 carries. Michael Knowles compiled 17 yards on 8 attempts and Loch Stimpson had 14 yards on 6 tries.

Loch Stimpson, a linebacker, and Rothlisberger, a defensive back, led the Wolverines in tackles.

The Wolverines played without standout running back Tyler Hart and a couple of other key starters. That gave some other players some game time. "I'm really proud of them for stepping it up," Ledford said.

Michael Knowles' recovery of a muffed punt helped set up Friday Harbor's first touchdown -- a 20-yard touchdown pass. Friday Harbor went up 14-0 after Franklin and Rothlisberger connected on a 34-yard touchdown. Franklin threaded the ball to Rothlisberger for the 2-point conversion and the Wolverines led 14-0 with 7:37 to go in the second quarter.

The Vikings cut the lead to 14-7 in the second period. Josh Mayson threaded the ball to Darren Stevens, who converted it into a 56-yard touchdown reception. Erik Hansen booted the PAT.

Franklin zipped a 25-yard pass to Rothlisberger in the end zone as the buzzer sounded. The two-point conversion failed and the Wolverines led 20-7.

Friday Harbor chewed up most of the third quarter on a drive to the Orcas 15-yard line but the Vikings held.

The Wolverines capped their scoring with Rothlisberger's 33-yard touchdown reception with 9:31 to go in the fourth quarter.

Orcas drove to the Wolverines 7-yard line but the Friday Harbor defense held. On their next possession, the Vikings drove to the red zone and Mayson scampered into the end zone on a quarterback draw with six seconds on the clock. Hansen kicked the PAT.

"Orcas played a really hard game," Ledford said. "Josh Mayson and Joe Sumrall both played outstanding for them. Their whole team played hard."

The Wolverines travel to Kings Friday, Sept. 8 for their first test in a realigned class. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
