Stemming a late rally, Orcas Island shaved visiting Friday Harbor 50-45 in girls basketball Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006.

Cara Peacock, who led all scorers with 23 points, scored 17 first half points as the Vikings hustled to a 31-17 at halftime lead.

"Our press was working early in the game," said Orcas coach Terry Moran-Hodge.

Friday Harbor started cutting through the Viking pressure in the second half and he Wolverines pulled within 6 points with four minutes remaining in the game.

Friday Harbor's Kiersten Radden, who scored 10 of her team-high 20 points in the fourth quarter, drilled a three with 2:21 left and the Wolverines trailed 44-41.

Lanie Padbury sank a free throw for the Vikings before Radden scored a bucket to draw the Wolverines within 2.

Anika Thomas chipped in 2 points for the Vikings before Peacock stole a Wolverine pass and Padbury put back a rebound and the Vikings led 49-43. Sarah Heeren kept Friday Harbor in the game by sinking a pair of free throws with 59 seconds to go but the Wolverines were unable rally. Padbury, who finished with 8 points, hit an insurance free-throw for the Vikings with 8 seconds remaining.

"I think the fatigue was coming on in the end," Moran-Hodge said, noting the Vikings were playing their third game in four days.

"Orcas is a good team," said first-year Friday Harbor coach Erik Jangard. "They're experienced, move the ball well and play solid team defense."

"We're getting better each game," Jangard said, noting his team includes three players from last year's varsity squad and only one starter. "We're really young and very inexperienced."

Sarah Heeren chipped in 12 points, pulled down 8 rebounds and had 7 steals. "Sarah stepped up big for us," Jangard said.

"Kiersten really came through, scoring-wise," Jangard said of Radden who also grabbed 7 rebounds.

Meaghan McComick scored 8 points and snagged 10 rebounds for the Wolverines.

Orcas improves to 4-0 and Friday Harbor drops to 0-2.

Scoring: Friday Harbor - Kiersten Radden 20, Heeren 12, McCormick 8, Jangard 4, Greenway 1.
Orcas - Peacock 23, Lanie Padbury 8, Wrightsman 7, Jessica McClary 6, Anika Thomas 4, Sofia Padury 2.
