Friday Harbor sluggers advance in playoffs

posted 05/04/2008
Friday Harbor shut out Meridian 3-0 Saturday, May 3 at the Class 1A Sub-District Baseball Tournament and clinched a spot in the Tri-District Tournament. The Wolverines lost their first game of the season when Coupeville nipped them 3-2 in the sub-district championship.

Friday Harbor (19-1) advances as District 1's No. 2 team and will travel to Bellevue Christian, the No. 1 Emerald City League finisher, on Wednesday, May 7.

Wolverine hurler Richie Ochoa was three outs from a no-hitter when a Meridian batter beat out a squibber up the third baseline. Friday Harbor catcher Albert Strasser erased the Trojan's scoring threat by picking off the baserunner on a snap throw to first.

That was the only hit allowed by Ochoa, who fanned 11 batters, walked two and hit one.

Roy Taylor hammered a double to the fence, driving in all Friday Harbor's runs in the first inning. The Wolverines loaded the bases with two outs. Michael Knowles reached base on an error, Ochoa received an intentional pass and Parker Lawson was hit by a pitch.

Lawson also rapped single -- the Wolverines' only other hit in the game.

Friday Harbor scored two runs in second inning against Coupeville, who advanced to the championship by thumping Nooksack Valley 11-2. Taylor worked a walk with one out and scored on Jordan Nash's double. Alex Jangard reached base on balls and scored on Ryan Aylward's single.

Coupeville scored three runs on three hits and an error in the sixth.

Friday Harbor had the tying and winning runs aboard in the seventh. Jordan Nash led off with a single. Alex Jangard hit into a fielder's choice and went to second on a base hit by Aylward. Strasser ripped the ball up the middle to the Wolves' perfectly-positioned second baseman who turned the double play.

Nooksack Valley shut out Meridian 10-0 in the consolation game and moves on as District 1's No. 3 seed to the Tri-District Tournament.
