Wolverine boys rally, nip Braves in final minuteFriday Harbor boys basketball team erased an 11-point fourth-quarter deficit and outscored La Conner 8-2 in the final minute for a 60-59 victory at La Conner, Friday, Feb. 1. "It was a pretty huge momentum change for us," said Friday Harbor coach Rod Turnbull. The win puts the Wolverines in solid position to share top Northwest 1A/2B League honors with the Braves. "If we both win-out, we'll tie for the league title," Turnbull said. Friday Harbor is 10-1 with two conference games at Darrington (7-3) on Feb. 5 and at Shoreline Christian (6-5) on Feb. 9. La Conner is 8-1 with games at Concrete (3-7) on Feb. 5, and Orcas Island on Feb. 8 before finishing at home against Mount Vernon Christian (1-9) on Feb. 9. The Wolverines shot poorly in the first half against the Braves. They went 0-for-6 from the free-throw line with five of the attempts the front-end of one-and-one opportunities. Friday Harbor trailed by 15 in the third quarter against the Braves. "We couldn't do anything right," Turnbull said. Friday Harbor's defense forced several La Conner turnovers down the stretch and the Wolverines "finally started making some shots," Turnbull said. Tommy Fowler paced Friday Harbor's balanced scoring attack with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Parker Lawson pumped in 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. "Parker had a big game," Turnbull said. Erik Nash scored 12 for the Wolverines. Austin Scheffer contributed 11, Ryan Aylward chipped in 8 and Pablo Lopez had 4. |
