Meridian conquers Friday Harbor 16-0

Story by Matt Pranger

Friday Harbor's football team limited second-ranked Meridian to eight points for three quarters Friday, Sept. 28, but the undefeated Trojans capitalized on a Wolverine miscue early in the fourth period and went on to a 16-0 victory.

"I'm proud of our kids," said Friday Harbor coach Richard Ledford. "We came up short on the scoreboard but didn't come up short with effort."

Meridian, last year's Class 1A state champ, improves to 5-0 and extends its unbeaten streak to 20 games. Friday Harbor, ranked eighth in last week's Class 1A poll, drops to 4-1.

The Trojans scored on their first possession of the game when quarterback Andrei Lintz ran the ball in from 14 yards out with 8:30 to go in the first quarter. Max Crook tossed the ball to Lintz for the two-point conversion.

Friday Harbor's defense kept Meridian from the end zone until 9:47 to go in the game. The Trojans recovered the ball on the 9-yard line after an errant punt snap. Three plays later Sean Hurlbut ran for the Trojans' second touchdown. Hurlbut, who led all rushers in the game, bulled in for the two-point conversion.

"Hurlbut was the difference in the game," Ledford said.

Friday Harbor's offense struggled most of the game against the Trojans' stingy defense. The Wolverines' best scoring opportunity was a long field-goal attempt that went wide.

The Wolverines travel to Lynden Christian (3-2) for a contest at 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6.
