Friday Harbor soccer team shuts out Concrete 5-0Story by Coach Mark Fishaut | |

posted 09/17/2007
The opening moments strongly resembled our recent history with no yield on nine shots in the first 10 minutes, but that is where the similarity ended. Every aspect of play was improved. There was intelligent passing, patience, and thoughtful shot selection. The breakthrough came in the eleventh minute with a booming shot in the back of the net by Beth Ware from Whitney Porter. These two upperclassmen have now adjusted to their new positions at center mid and left striker respectively. Their level of comfort in leading the attack has become obvious and vital to the team’s progress. The flood gates were now open with scoring coming from all directions and modes of shot. Ware cleverly deceived the Concrete wall and finished out first set piece of the season. Her corner was then converted by freshman Megan Goudie for her first goal as a Wolverine. Charlotte Nygaard, still adjusting to her new role as a striker, found gold from the right side of the 18 yard box off a deft feed from Shelby Ness. The scoring was completed by the debut goal of Clara Brand finishing smartly in a scramble in front of an overmatched goal keeper. Score at the interval: Friday Harbor 5- Concrete 0. It is a coaching luxury to have a comfortable lead and an eager bench filled with young players, and it is of no advantage humiliating opponents by running up the score. So, with the exception of senior Kate Fyrqvist who became acquainted with center midfield, the second session featured play from underclassmen. Freshmen Madie McPadden and Maggie Andersen showed well, as did sophomore Lola Elford. Other featured players included defender Anna Gunnarrson and midfielder Ingrid Carlson. Late in the half, a number of starters returned to the field to help preserve the shutout for keeper Hannah Snow. Final score: Friday Harbor 5- Concrete 0. All technical aspects of play continue to improve. Of equal or great importance, commitment and communication are maturing nicely. We all look forward to building on this effort for three away games next week. |
