Game Report of 9/29/2007

A long week of travel for the Lady Wolverines came to an end with a 0-8 loss to the powerful Meridian Trojans. The score is not an accurate reflection of the flow of the match. There is no question that at this point in time that Meridian is the sort of state level side to which we aspire. That being said, we are slowly but surely making progress.

As was the case in the recent match against La Conner, a defense composed entirely of underclassmen requited themselves well against a squad composed entirely of juniors and seniors. Not until late in the game did Meridian debut any underclassmen, while we used this non-league match as an opportunity to severely test the regulars and give the bench ample time to participate.

There is no comparison between the 2006 fixture and today’s game: for 60 of 80 minutes this was a fairly level contest. There is little doubt the Meridian’s aggressiveness and first touch on the ball is better than that of Friday Harbor. Still, there were opportunities available for us, which were not finished. It was really not the strength of the opponent that ultimately made the difference, but our inability to do the tasks that we normally do well: three weak goals were yielded on corners when none had been surrendered all season. Combine these with an unfortunate own goal early in the first session and there’s the game. All these deficiencies can be and will be remedied.

Several of the girls showed extremely well. Hannah Snow continues to impress in goal, while Hannah Starr played astonishingly well on defense. Support players including Madie McPadden, Hannah Eschelman, and Ingrid Carlson deported themselves nicely in their limited minutes and will have a bright future on this team.

The Wolverines have a well deserved break until their next game at home against Mount Vernon Christian on Thursday, October 4th.
