This match was a summary of the whole season to date: there are two teams the one that is invisible and the one that gets the job done. Today, both were on the pitch. A smaller line up limited by illness totally dominated the first session but were unable to score against an outclassed but gamer Mount Vernon Christian side. It was a repeat of the first contest when Friday Harbor had out shot their opponent 86-9 but was lucky to escape with a win. Keeper Hannah Snow touched the ball once in the half and the shot total was 43-1, yet the score was level at 0-0.

It is an understatement to state that the half time conversation was volatile from both the coach and the captains. The team was encouraged not be paralyzed by the errors but focus on quality soccer. They were also exhorted to relax and take care of business and not react to their opponent’s play.

The team that had famously beaten La Conner took the field for the second half. Shelby Ness opened the scoring in the 42nd minute from close in and the onslaught began.

Whitney Porter promptly made it two nil with a fine finish off a superb serve from the defensive end by central Faby Bell. Elle Guard made it 3-0 off a corner from Beth Ware while Porter gained a brace, again, off Ware’s delightful corner serve. The Lady Wolverines now have four goals off corners midway through the season. Novice Hannah Eschelman off Ware’s delivery completed the rout with a long strike of another service from Ware.

The remainder of the match was spent preserving another well deserved Hannah Snow shut out. The last 15 minutes featured a lovely display of passing by the Wolverines, demonstrating how nicely their touch has progressed. The team resumes practice in anticipation of an intense stretch of seven games in the next three weeks.

Final score: Friday Harbor 5- Mount Vernon Christian 0.
