Report of Girls Soccer Game of 10-9-2007:By Coach Mark Fishaut posted 10/15/2007
The ice was broken midway through the session on a floating corner from Charlotte Nygaard which was headed home with a vengeance by Beth Ware. The favor was returned a few minutes later as Ware served a delightful chip to Nygaard who touched it once then volleyed it in for a 2-0 lead. There was some nice passing but no further scoring as the first 40 minutes ended with the score Friday Harbor 2- Concrete 0. The second half began just as the first, with the ball spending all of its time at the Lions end of the field. At 50 minutes, everything changed. In the midst of making a lovely sliding save (her first test in the game), keeper Hannah Snow slammed her knee into the goal post. The injury both effectively ended her season and totally took the wind out of the Wolverines sails. Lola Elford was put in the unenviable position of filling the pipes after not playing goal for over a year. Concrete promptly knotted the match on goals for which Elford could take no blame. Gradually, the girls overcame panic mode and actually had chances to finish the game in regulation. However, that was not to be, and the 80 minutes were completed with a score of Friday Harbor 2- Concrete 2. The test of a good team is its ability to handle adversity: the players came off the field for the break grim but determined and focused. The overtime session was no contest:. Friday Harbor simply overwhelmed the Lady Lions. A position switch brought Lauren Zander up to left midfield, and she ended the proceedings by crushing a shot from 25 yards into the upper left corner that the keeper was helpless to defend Final score: Friday Harbor 3- Concrete 2. The squad is now above .500 for the first time this year. One must marvel at the depth or character and poise of this young team ably lead by their captains who now include Amanda Root among them. These are the things that cannot be taught and that will carry them through the remainder of the season. |
