The regular season is drawing to a close with a vengeance with 6
games in 9 days.
Today’s fixture against North Sound Christian was a make up of a
postponed contest from last week. It was an opportunity to make
amends for the eminently forgettable match lost in September. Several
intense practices and intra-squad scrimmages prepared the Wolverines
for this test, which was passed with flying colors.
Friday Harbor dominated from the opening whistle, with the first
score coming on the fourth minute with a Kate Fyrqvist completion of
corner #6 of the season. By mid session, the game was essentially
over, as Whitney Porter found gold off a Lauren Zander cross. She
then took matters into her own hands with a smartly finished
breakaway created by Beth Ware. Score at the break: Friday Harbor 3-
North Sound Christian 0.
The second half was much like the first. There was little North
Sound was able to do that was not stifled by the Lady Wolverines
defense. Ware finished off yet another corner from Charlotte Nygaard.
Nygaard herself slammed one home off Fyrqvist’s elegant delivery to
make it 5-0.
At this point, many players entered the field and requited themselves
nicely. Good minutes were given by Ingrid Carlson, Alex Macdonald,
and Hannah Eschelman. A brief defensive lapse resulted in a late own
goal to make it 5-1. Less than two minutes from time, Amanda Root
was taken down in the North Sound box. Her penalty shot completed the
scoring.
Note is made of Lola Elford’s first complete game in goal. She is
ready to do the job for the remainder of the season. Kate Fyrqvist’s
finest performance in her four years also demands recognition.
Final score: Friday Harbor 6- North Sound Christian 1
