Report of Girl’s Soccer Game of 10-16-2007 The League Championship was on the line today and the Lady Wolverines came up just short. La Conner ultimately won an outstanding match 5-4 but Friday Harbor has every reason to be proud of our girls. The match started smartly with Charlotte Nygaard opening the scoring in the third minute off a deft feed from Kate Fyrqvist. Nor longer after, Friday harbor took a 2-0 lead as Nygaard finished a brilliant goal off the turn at the top of the 18.

However, La Connor to their credit was not to be denied, scoring 3 goals in a space of 20 minutes as the Friday Harbor defense sagged. Frankly sloppy defensive play as much as La Conner prowess put the team in the in a vulnerable position. But our girls recouped smartly, and Beth Ware finished yet another corner (#8 of the season) delivered by Nygaard on the final play of the half. Score at the interval, an remarkable 3-3.

Friday Harbor opened the second half aggressively, but another lapse allowed La Conner to take to lead 4-3 in the 42nd minute. Again, the Wolverines fought back and Whitney Porter knotted the score at 4-4 at 60 minutes. La Conner scored again 5 minutes later, and despite the pour side’s valiant effort, they were unable to come back to tie.

So what was the difference? La Conner’s first touch is still just a hair better than that of Friday Harbor. Still, the test was there to be won, and the graduation of several key La Conner players opens the door for our girls for the next three years.

The team will regroup for a rematch tomorrow with Concrete that is dedicated to Hannah Snow. The focus now is on finishing the regular season well and moving on to the playoffs.

Final Score: Friday Harbor 4- La Conner 5.
