Wolverines Soccer team finishes regular season with overtime win over Mount Vernon

Girl's Soccer Game of 10/23/2007: On a stunning fall afternoon, the team traveled to Mount Vernon Christian for the last regular game of the season. With second place in the League secure, this was an opportunity to try unusual formations with players in unfamiliar positions. This is always uncomfortable for kids but helps them learn and aids in preparation for the next season.

Thus, forwards played on defense, and various striker and midfield combinations not previously seen took the pitch. The inside midfield duo of Elle Guard and Alex MacDonald which had debuted in the second half of Monday’s match began the game. They have much to learn, but will be ready to take up the mantle from Beth Ware and Kate Fyrqvist.

Megan Goudie, Maggie Andersen, Hannah Eschelman tasted time at forward in a quiet first half. Despite all the rearrangements, the “new” squad held MVC starters scoreless and some nice saves by the opposing keeper kept it level after 40 minutes. Friday Harbor 0- MVC 0.

Amanda Root took Lola Elford’s place between the uprights for the second half, playing in goal for the first time since middle school. The Hurricanes scored first, igniting the Wolverines, as moments later Whitney Porter knotted the affair off a Charlotte Nygaard distribution.

Shortly thereafter, Beth Ware was awarded a free kick that found the back of the net before MVC knew what had happened. 2-1 Friday Harbor. She again took matters into her own hands to make it 3-1. There were a few tense moments late in the game as the Hurricanes completed a penalty shot but all was decided by Porter’s second goal.

The regular season is completed with a fine record of 9 wins and 6 losses (9-3 in League). A goal here, a few breaks there, and it could have been 12-3. The girls have one day to prepare for their next test, a play off game at home against Lynden Christian, Thursday the 25th at 4:30 PM.

Final score: Friday Harbor 4 – Mount Vernon Christian 2.
