Game Report of September 11, 2007:

By Coach Mark Fishaut

No excuses. Here is the reality: a game that could have been won was not. The Lady Wolverines opening match was a loss to their toughest league rival, La Conner. The girls began smartly and clearly dominated the first session but were unable to adequately test the Braves defense. So, for the third match in a row dating back to the 2006 season, the teams were level at 0-0 at 40 minutes. Unfortunately, the heat took the better of several starters, which created a distinct disadvantage.

Still, the game remained scoreless until midway through the second half when La Conner broke the ice on a nice pass across the goal that was finished smartly at the far post. Two more goals were yielded as the Wolverines pressed to tie the game.

Much is to be taken away from this fixture. Everyone on this very young team had the opportunity to play in their first test and get over the jitters associated with the occasion.

Many established players found themselves in new positions, and are still adjusting to these changes. No matter how many intrasquad scrimmages are played, it is only real matches that create the necessary dynamics to blend everyone together. All will mature in good time. There are yet two more opportunities to defeat this old nemesis.

In her debut, striker Elle Guard showed well. Midfielder Alex MacDonald and defender Fabiola Bell proved how much they have matured in a year. Hannah Snow continues to demonstrate that she plays in goal at an elite level.

The Lady Wolverines next match is on the road on Saturday, September 15th against South Whidbey.
