2007 Lady Wolverines Soccer Preview

By Coach Mark Fishaut

posted 09/04/2007
The 2007 season will open with quite a new look for the Lady Wolverines. Graduation and departures have left the team with but five upperclassmen. Captains Kate Fyrqvist (senior), 2006 MVP Beth Ware (senior) and Whitney Porter (junior) will lead a team that includes seven freshmen and six sophomores. In addition, two exchange students, Charlotte Nygaard (Norway) and Anna Gunnarsson (Sweden) will contribute extra experience to this young squad.

Returning players include 10 goal scorer Shelby Ness, goalkeepers Hannah Snow and Lola Elford, and midfielders Alex MacDonald and Ingrid Carlson. Lost to graduation are the likes of striker Jenny Guard, replaced by sister Elle Guard and cousin Hannah Starr.

Despite its youth, this group as a whole probably has more seasons of soccer experience than any of its predecessors. Most of the players trained together in workshops and camps early in the summer and participated in our rigorous preseason fitness program. These girls have likely clocked more track miles than any women’s sports team in school history, and have made the presence of young women in the weight training room an expectation rather than an oddity. They also know that sport is not just about competition: there will continue to be commitment to social responsibility with team support of Habitat for Humanity of New Orleans and of Breast Cancer Awareness.

The season begins on September 11th with a challenging game against perennial rival La Conner. There will be non-league matches against very strong teams that include South Whidbey and Meridian. Only by playing higher level sides can these girls aspire to higher goals. Coach Mark Fishaut will be more than ably assisted by his associate and experienced player Eduardo Miller. Their philosophy is, win or lose, to promote and teach high quality entertaining soccer, to instill a love of the game, and to encourage all to improve every practice and game. Everyone looks forward to an exciting 2007 season and to continuing the development of the teams of the future.
