Lopez Island's boys basketball team turned in its poorest shooting outing of the year in a 42-26 loss to Lake Quinault in the opening round of the Class 1B State Basketball Tournament in Yakima Wednesday, Feb. 20. The Lobos move to the consolation bracket and face Cusick at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21 in the SunDome.

The Lobos (18-3) shot 15 percent from the field: They went 9-for-53 from the 2-point zone and 3-for-23 from 3-point range. held the Lobos' leading scorer Jordan Smith to 16 points.

The Elks (19-3) didn't scorch the nets either, shooting 16-for-54 for about 30 percent, but they forced the Lobos into some poor percentage shots. Casey Elder led them with 13 points.

The Lobos kept pace with the Elks until two minutes to go in the first quarter when Cameron Daniels drilled a three-pointer. From there Lake Quinault went on a 15-5 run. Lopez cut the lead to 9 points at the end of the first half but the Elks opened the third quarter with 10 unanswered points.

Smith's 16 points led all scorers. He also tied for high rebounder with 9. Barry Christopherson scored 5 points for Lopez and yanked down 7 rebounds against the Elks' taller lineup. Keaton Farris scored 3 points and Alex Buffum contributed 2.
