Orcas girls edge La Conner for league's second place

posted 02/11/2008
Orcas Island girls basketball team trimmed La Conner 38-37 Thursday, Feb. 7 and clinched a second-place finish in the Northwest 1A/2B League. The Vikings advance to the Class 2B Tri-District Tournament as the District 1's No. 2 team.

The Vikings finish 9-3 in league and are 15-3 overall. La Conner is 7-5 and 14-6.

The Vikings' Cara Peacock led all scorers with 14 points. Orcas Island's other scorers were: Maddy Smith 6, Anika Thomas 6, Lanie Padbury 5, Renae Harvey 3, Melissa Moran-Hodge 2 and Stephanie Shaw 2.

Beating the Braves leads to a better berth in the Tri-District Tournament. The Vikings host the No. 6 Sea-Tac 2B League team Thursday, Feb. 14 instead of a No. 4 team. If Vikings win the Valentine's Day contest they advance to a quarterfinal Saturday, Feb. 16 at Chief Leschi High School in Puyallup.

The victory over La Conner potentially allows Orcas to avoid Northwest 1A/2B League undefeated champ Shoreline Christian until the Tri-District Championship.

The top five Tri-District teams advance to the state tournament in Spokane Feb. 27-March 1.
