Viking girls rally, advance to Tri-District semifinal
Story by Matt Pranger Orcas Island outscored Seattle Lutheran 19-4 in the fourth quarter to squeak out a 44-39 victory Saturday, Feb. 16 in the Class 2B Tri-District Tournament at Chief Leschi High School. "We dug ourselves a hole and came back," said Orcas coach Terry Moran-Hodge. The Vikings (17-3) advance to a winner-to-state semifinal game against King's West (15-4) at 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 18 at Chief Leschi. "It's really important to stay in the winner's bracket," the Viking coach said. The Vikings' speedy, swarming defensive pressure – keyed by Stephanie Shaw, Lanie Padbury and Maddy Smith -- paid off in the second half against the Saints (17-6). "We really played well defensively, especially down the stretch," Moran-Hodge said. On offense, Orcas started attacking the basket late in the game. "Our girls were looking to drive a little bit more," Moran-Hodge said. "We have some pretty good slashers." Eight Vikings scored against the Saints. "We played good team basketball," their coach said. Melissa Moran-Hodge led the Vikings with 13 points and 6 rebounds. Shaw contributed 5 points and 10 boards. Cara Peacock scored 7 points and had 5 steals. Anika Thomas pitched in 7 points and 7 rebounds. Padbury scored 8 and Sydney Harris, Renae Harvey and Smith added 2 apiece. Seattle Lutheran's Camille Depew led all scorers with 16. The competition stiffens for the Vikings. King's West won the Sea-Tac League with a 10-0 record. "They're the No. 2 seed. We've got our work cut out for us," Moran-Hodge said. |
