Orcas Island girls basketball team built a 7-point third-quarter lead against King's West Monday, Feb. 18 but the Warriors outscored the Vikings 20-4 in the final period for a 47-34 victory.

"That was a really good team," Orcas coach Terry Moran-Hodge said of King's West (16-4), who advances to the Class 2B Tri-District Tournament championship Saturday.

Orcas (17-4) moves to the consolation bracket and faces familiar Northwest 1A/2B League foe La Conner (16-7) at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22 at Chief Leschi High School.

The winner of the consolation semifinal advances to the third-and-fourth-place game and clinches a state berth. "We're looking forward to beating La Conner and going to state," Moran-Hodge said.

A loss in the semifinal doesn't result in elimination for the Vikings, who split with La Conner in league action. The semifinal loser plays in the winner-to-state/loser-out fifth-and-sixth-place contest Saturday, Feb. 23. "If we lose we get one more chance," Moran-Hodge said.

All but one of King's West players matched up 3 to 5 inches taller than Orcas. "After who we played today that La Conner team's going to look short," Moran-Hodge said.

The quick Vikings wore down the Warriors in the first half though, and gained a 28-21 advantage in the third period. Orcas led 30-27 at the start of the final period but King's West was finally able to move the ball inside. Center Megan Spence scored 10 of her game-leading 20 points in the fourth quarter.

Playing pressure defense for three quarters took a toll on the Viking shooters, who went extremely cold.

"With six minutes to go it came apart for us," Moran-Hodge said. "That's a really good team… I should've got more legs in there."

Cara Peacock led the Vikings with 11 points. Lanie Padbury contributed 11 and Anika Thomas had 6. Melissa Moran-Hodge and Maddy Smith chipped in 4 apiece and Stephanie Shaw scored 2.
