Orcas girls overcome Friday Harbor

The Orcas Island girls basketball team held off Friday Harbor 61-50 in a home game Tuesday, Dec. 11.

"Orcas is the tough, they have a good team," said Friday Harbor coach Erik Jangard. "I think they are going to do very well in Class 2B."

"Friday Harbor is a much better team than last year," said Orcas coach Terry Moran-Hodge.

Jangard was pleased with his team's performance. "This is a real big step for us. A loss is still hard but I'm happy with the effort," Jangard said.

The Wolverines struggled a bit with the speedy Vikings' press at the start of the game, falling behind 14-2 in the first quarter. Friday Harbor started breaking the press and battled back into the game. The Wolverines knotted the game 14-14 at the start of the second period on Kiersten Radden's three-point shot.

The team played close until 5:25 to go in the fourth quarter when Melissa Moran-Hodge canned a trey to put the Vikings up 51-44. Radden hit the floor hard 20 seconds later, left the game, and the Wolverines were unable cut the lead.

"Kiersten going down, that was the turning point," Jangard said of the point guard who scored 16 points.

Moran-Hodge drilled four of six three-point shots and paced the Vikings with 16 points. Anika Thomas scored 12 and Cara Peacock had 10. Other Orcas scorers were: Renae Harvey 7, Lanie Padbury 6, Stephanie Shaw 5, Halley Parnell 3 and Syndey Harris 2.

Brooke Jangard led all scorers with 18 and went 4-for-6 at the free-throw line. "It was a break-out game for her," Coach Jangard said.

Friday Harbor's other scorers were: Meaghan McCormick 4, Kelsey Barnes 4, Maggie Anderson 2, Courtney Clark 2 and Kelsey O'Day 2.
