Darrin Scheffer to succeed Ledford as head Friday Harbor football coach
By Matt Pranger
Veteran assistant football coach Darrin Scheffer is ready for a new
challenge at Friday Harbor High School: The Friday Harbor alum will be
succeeding Richard Ledford as the Wolverines' head coach next
season.
"I'm excited to give it a shot," Scheffer said. "It's something
I've been working toward and looking forward to."
"Darrin's an outstanding young man who has a lot of potential to do
a great job," Ledford said.
Scheffer brings 10 years of experience to the position. In addition
to helping Ledford, he assisted Wolverine head coaches Gene Wilson and
Dave Anderson. "I have a broad range of experience... It's helped me
develop my own perspective," Scheffer said.
Shannon Plummer, Greg Truesdale and Mark Tompkins -- Friday
Harbor's other assistant coaches for the past several seasons -- are
returning. "We're a pretty good team," Scheffer said. "We work off
each other and hopefully we'll continue a great program."
Under Ledford's guidance, the Wolverines became a state playoff
regular and twice advanced to Class 1A's gridiron final four. "We're
set to keep it going and hopefully to take it to a new level,"
Scheffer said.
Ledford left some "big shoes" to fill, Scheffer says, and the new
head coach is not in "position" to fill. "I'm going to make my own
tracks," he said. "I'll step out and give it my best shot."
