Friday Harbor’s No. 1 teams advance to regional tennis tourney

Zak Williams, Friday Harbor’s No. 1 singles player, and Elliot Thomsen and Andrew Westphalen, the Wolverines’ No. 1 doubles team, defeated Coupeville’s best at the District 1 Tournament Saturday, Oct. 27. The Wolverines advance to the state-qualifying Tri-District in May.
Williams, who received a first-round bye, lost the first four games to Coupeville’s Nathaniel Mouw but rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory. "Like our No. 1 doubles team, Zak started slow then picked it up," said Friday Harbor tennis coach Dick Barnes. "He was stronger mentally today."
Friday Harbor’s Jake Byron assisted Williams by playing Mouw tough in the opening round. Mouw won 6-3, 6-2. Since Coupeville’s No. 2 player didn’t show, Byron finished third and will attend Tri-District as first alternate.
Thomsen and Westphalen beat Eric Taylor and Andrew Mouw 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 in the finals. The Wolverines No. 1 duo dropped the Wolves No. 2 pair of Scott Harbor-Adrian Kuschnereit 6-2, 6-1 in the first round.
The Wolverines’ Drew Allen and Alex Altman nearly upset Taylor-Mouw, making the Wolves give their all for a 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 victory. "Our No. 2 team really through a scare into their doubles team," Barnes said.
Allen and Altman placed third and will be first alternates at Tri-District.
