Wolverines top Braves for 3rd straight baseball title

updated 05/10/02 posted 05/08/02
Elliot Thomsen allowed only three hits Tuesday, May 7, and received some solid defense from his Wolverine teammates as the Friday Harbor baseball team won its third consecutive league title by trimming host La Conner 5-2.

"That's more like this team's capable of playing," Friday Harbor coach Rich Warin said.

"Elliot pitched the game of his life," Warin said of the junior hurler who retired eight consecutive batters in the middle of the game.

Friday Harbor, 12-3 in conference and 15-3 overall, advances as the Northwest A League's No. 1 seed in the Class A Regional Tournament's 16-team first round. The Wolverines play the Southwest Washington runner-up in a loser-out game at Enumclaw 2 p.m. Saturday, May 18. At 6 p.m. the same day, the first game's winner plays the winner of a match-up between the Emerald City League runner-up and the Chinook League champion. Four regional champions advance to the state final four in Yakima Friday and Saturday, May 24 and 25.

The Wolverines usually don't show much emotion after a victory but the players piled into a hugging jumble around their pitcher after winning two of three conference contests against the Braves (11-3 and 12-4).

"It's awesome. A great honor…especially going out beating La Conner. There's no better feeling," said senior Jacob Ross, who drove in the go-ahead run and made a pro-level, rally-ending throw.

"I never really had a feeling like this before -- being able to come through in my last at-bat in the regular season," said senior Charlie Herbert, who rapped a run-scoring single as a pinch hitter. "The last four years in baseball will probably be the best times of my life. The group of guys and coaches I've been with since my freshman year have made it really fun. I know I won't ever forget this."

After a Brave rapped a two-run homer in the bottom of the first, Friday Harbor drew even in the second. Brett Bartmasser led off by blasting the first pitch over the left field fence. Fletcher Vynne rapped a base hit and Thomsen reached base on balls. Vynne advanced to second when Trefor Bacon hit into a fielder's choice. Timmy Aylward singled home Vynne.

Adam Posenjak started the fifth inning with a single and scored Ross's double to deep center.

Vynne reached base on an error and Bacon was hit by a pitch with one out. Herbert singled home Vynne and the Wovlerines led 4-2. Posenjak picked the final RBI by blooping the ball into shallow right. The fielder caught the ball and threw it home in time for a tag but Bacon scored when the catcher couldn't hang on.

La Conner put the tying run at the plate in the sixth and seventh innings but the Wolverines' defense held. With one out and runners on first and third, centerfielder Jacob Ross caught a deep pop up and rocketed the ball Ichiro-style from center field to home plate and catcher Vynne, who made the tag. With runners again on first and third but with two outs, Friday Harbor third baseman Andrew Westphalen grabbed a gasping grounder and zipped it to Danny Johnson for the game-ending force at first.

Vynne went 3-for-3 at the plate, hitting a double, two singles and also reached base on an error. Aylward was 2-for-3 with two singles and an RBI.
