Friday Harbor golfers place 2nd at stateposted 05/21/02 Friday Harbor coach Dave Anderson said it was a bit of "a bummer" after the Wolverines learned they narrowly missed the team title. "Our goal was to bring home a trophy, though, and we feel good about that," Anderson said. Friday Harbor freshman Hank Schuman was 12th and junior Nick Schuman came in 21st . The Wolverines finished with 28.5 points. Royal City won the tourney with 30 and Seattle Christian was a distant third with 23.5. The Wolverines' team effort was the highest since Anderson took over the golf program 10 years ago, and Benz's finish was the second best individual performance during the coach's tenure. "All in all it was a pretty good trip," Anderson said of his final road trip as a Friday Harbor coach. His family is moving to Las Vegas this summer. Orcas junior Arlen Plaister tied for seventh and teammate Chris Bennett was 17th. The Vikings tallied 16.5 team points for fifth place, behind fourth-place Bush, which scored 22.5 points. After shooting a 39 on the front-nine Tuesday, Benz rallied on the back nine, cutting out four strokes. He finished the final round with a 74. That added to his first-day tally of 70 gave him a 144. Medalist Craig Leslie of Liberty slipped from his 71 first-round score by two strokes and finished with a total of 140. Elijah Perkins of Royal City added seven strokes to his first round, shooting a 75 the second day but squeaked by Benz with a 143 total. Hank Schuman used 78 strokes the first day and 80 the second, finishing with a 158. Nick Schuman shot an 86 in the final round and an 80 the second round for an overall score was 166. Plaister remained consistent in the tourney, shooting a 78 both days. Bennett had an 84 on the second round and a 79 on the first round. The top 17 boys and top 11 girls from the Tri-District qualify for the WIAA A Boys or A/B Girls State Golf Meets on May 20-21. The girls will play at Columbia Point Golf Course in Richland and the boys will play at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. Anderson noted a few other golfers were capable of shooting in the low 70s but "Justin was the only one who came through and did it." His coach commended Benz for his hard work this season, which included weight training. Nick Schuman followed Benz with an 83 for the Wolverines. Matt Cowell shot an 86, Hank Schuman an 87. Joe Ausilio improved on the second nine holes and finished with a 90. Chris Bennett and Matt Taylor each shot 85 to pace Orcas. Wolverine senior Justin Benz overcame not only strong play by the Vikings but the flu to earn medalist honors. He shot a 78 on the 72-par course. Chris Bennett led the Vikings with an 80. Arlen Plaister shot an 84, Matt Taylor an 86, Dan Vierthaler a 94 and Travis Parker a 106. Kohl Metzger-Bell finished second for the Wolverines with an 88. "It was a pretty good run," Friday Harbor coach Dave Anderson said of the streak. A Friday Harbor golfer received some inaccurate advice and didn't finish a hole after using 10 strokes. High school boys rules require to play out all holes. The golfer's scores were thrown out after coaches learned of the misunderstanding. Justin Benz earned medalist honors by shooting a 37 for the Wolverines. Other Friday Harbor scorers were: Hank Schuman 40; Nick Schuman 44; Kohl Metzger-Bell 49; and Jake Byron 66. Friday Harbor's Hank Schuman earned medalist honors by shooting a 34 in the eight-hole match. Justin Benz shot 39, Nick Shuman 41, Kohl Metzger-Bell 45 and Joe Ausilio 46. Chris Bennett led Orcas with a 37. The other top Viking scorers were: Arlen Plaister 38; Matt Tayler 43; Adam Schaefer 43; and Dan Vierthaler 47. In girls action, the Vikings' Danielle Johannek was medalist with a 54. |
