Friday Harbor softball team closes league play with win

The Wolverines finish the regular season 13-7 overall and 9-6 in league. They advance as the Northwest A League's No. 3 seed to the Tri-District Tournament in Mount Vernon Saturday, May 18. Five of the tourney's eight teams go on to the Class A State Fastpitch Tournament in Pasco Friday and Saturday, May 24 and 25.

Hope lines homer, Wolverines upset Wildcats in extra innings

Friday Harbor's Rebecca Hope earned "a senior moment" Friday, May 3. In her last home game of her high school softball career, Hope drilled her first homer "ever," helping the Wolverines stun Archbishop Murphy 2-1 in 10 innings.

"She just ripped a line drive down the right line to the fence and she just booked," Friday Harbor coach Kevin Carlton said of Hope.

"I was hoping not to strike out," Hope said of facing Archbishop Murphy's standout pitcher Kristen Linscott . She is a pretty wicked pitcher," said Hope. "It was a great way to end the season."

Kelsea Peterman rapped the game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning. In accordance with league rules, a runner -- senior Leah Evans -- was placed on second base. Evans went to third on Melissa Peacock's perfectly-placed sacrifice bunt down the first-base line.

Friday Harbor's defense shut down Archbishop Murphy's batters, giving up only one run in the sixth. Hope tied the game in the bottom of the inning. "We fielded the ball tremendously," Carlton said.

Friday Harbor blanks La Conner in softball

Friday Harbor's softball team clinched at least a tie for third place in the Northwest A League by shutting out La Conner 11-0 on Monday, April 29.

The top three teams in the conference advance to the Tri-District Tournament. Coupeville (8-1) leads the league and Archbishop Murphy (9-3) is in second. Friday Harbor is 6-4 and Concrete is 5-6. The Wolverines, who host Archbishop Murphy Friday and close the regular season at La Conner (2-10), have an edge in a tie-breaker with Concrete: Friday Harbor went 3-0 against the Lions in league play.

Wolverines crush Crusaders

Friday Harbor scored 27 runs in the first two innings en route to a 31-4 non-league win over Tacoma Baptist Saturday, April 27.

The Wolverines scored four runs in the first inning before crossing the plate 23 times in the second. All 17 Friday Harbor players suited up for the game played.

Megan Vynne smacked a double, three singles, twice reached base on balls and turned some solid plays at shortstop. "Megan had a great game," said Friday Harbor coach Kevin Carlton.

Wolverine fastpitch team's rally falls short against Lions

Friday Harbor's softball team overcame "one bad inning" at Concrete Friday, April 26, but fell in the last inning 16-15.

The Wolverines scored 5 runs in the first inning before the Lions crossed the plate 12 times off a couple of hits, a couple of walks and a couple of errors.

Friday Harbor chipped away at the lead and went up 15-14 in the top of the seventh. Maggie Foley smacked a base hit. The Wolverines tied the Lions 14-14 after Summer Ausilio ripped a triple, driving home Foley. Ausilio scored the go-ahead run after Sissy Carlton hit a slow roller.

Concrete's Whitney Johnson and Alicia Harris reached base on balls in the bottom of the seventh. Brianna Hoover tripled, driving in the tying and winning runs for the Lions, who improve to 5-6 in Northwest A League action and 7-7 overall.

Ausilio and Lauren Brem each hit a single and double for the Wolverines. Kelsea Peterman rapped a base hit and stole two bases. Megan Vynne has two singles and a stolen base.

Friday Harbor is 5-4 and 8-4 with three league contests to go. The Wolverines play at fifth-place La Conner Monday, April 29 and Tuesday, May 7 and host second-place Archbishop Murphy Friday, May 3.
