Friday Harbor softball team closes league play with winFreshman Lauren Brem hit 2-for-3 and senior Leah Evans smacked two hits as Friday Harbor trimmed La Conner 3-2 in Northwest A League action Tuesday, May 7. The Wolverines finish the regular season 13-7 overall and 9-6 in league. They advance as the Northwest A League's No. 3 seed to the Tri-District Tournament in Mount Vernon Saturday, May 18. Five of the tourney's eight teams go on to the Class A State Fastpitch Tournament in Pasco Friday and Saturday, May 24 and 25. Kelsea Peterman rapped the game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning. In accordance with league rules, a runner -- senior Leah Evans -- was placed on second base. Evans went to third on Melissa Peacock's perfectly-placed sacrifice bunt down the first-base line. Friday Harbor's defense shut down Archbishop Murphy's batters, giving up only one run in the sixth. Hope tied the game in the bottom of the inning. "We fielded the ball tremendously," Carlton said.

Friday Harbor blanks La Conner in softballposted 05/01/02 The top three teams in the conference advance to the Tri-District Tournament. Coupeville (8-1) leads the league and Archbishop Murphy (9-3) is in second. Friday Harbor is 6-4 and Concrete is 5-6. The Wolverines, who host Archbishop Murphy Friday and close the regular season at La Conner (2-10), have an edge in a tie-breaker with Concrete: Friday Harbor went 3-0 against the Lions in league play. The Wolverines scored four runs in the first inning before crossing the plate 23 times in the second. All 17 Friday Harbor players suited up for the game played. The Wolverines scored 5 runs in the first inning before the Lions crossed the plate 12 times off a couple of hits, a couple of walks and a couple of errors. Friday Harbor chipped away at the lead and went up 15-14 in the top of the seventh. Maggie Foley smacked a base hit. The Wolverines tied the Lions 14-14 after Summer Ausilio ripped a triple, driving home Foley. Ausilio scored the go-ahead run after Sissy Carlton hit a slow roller. Concrete's Whitney Johnson and Alicia Harris reached base on balls in the bottom of the seventh. Brianna Hoover tripled, driving in the tying and winning runs for the Lions, who improve to 5-6 in Northwest A League action and 7-7 overall. Ausilio and Lauren Brem each hit a single and double for the Wolverines. Kelsea Peterman rapped a base hit and stole two bases. Megan Vynne has two singles and a stolen base. Friday Harbor is 5-4 and 8-4 with three league contests to go. The Wolverines play at fifth-place La Conner Monday, April 29 and Tuesday, May 7 and host second-place Archbishop Murphy Friday, May 3. |
