"I was going for 115 feet but I was so happy with eighth place," Morrill said of her 106-foot, 2-inch throw on Friday, May 24. Morrill entered the meet as a 10th seed. Her previous PR was 104-4 at the Tri-District Meet one week earlier. Junior high jumper Catherine Grosjacques finished 14th after leaping 4-4 Saturday, May 25. Morrill threw the javelin 104-4 and finished second at Tri-District. "That was just phenomenal," Friday Harbor coach Greg Hertel, who saw his charge's performance from across the King's High School track. "She was just radiant, bouncing." Grosjacques was also smiling after finishing the Tri-District runner-up. She initially thought leap of 4-foot-8 mark put her in third. "That gives her confidence," Hertel said her second leap over 4-8. "She knows it was not a fluke." Morrill enters the state meet as the 10th seed but is only six feet back of the leader. Grosjacques is also seeded 10th and her mark is four inches below Class A's best. Friday Harbor's Ashia Neuroth and Maya Kruger also bettered their times in the 1600-meter run at Tri-District. posted 05/13/02 "I was very happy with the kids," said Friday Harbor coach Greg Hertel. "Just about everybody PR'd," he added. "Catherine Grosjacques cleared 4-foot-8 in the high jump. She's a very happy camper." Grosjacques will also compete in the 200-meter dash, the 4 x 100 and 4 x 200 relays at Tri-District at King's High School Thursday, May 16 and Saturday, May 18. The top five district finishers advance to Tri-District. Karen Morrill credited volunteer coach Courtney Dempsey with helping her set a personal best 93 feet, 5.5 inches in the javelin. "Courtney has really helped out a lot," Morrill said. After running, leaping and throwing in wind, rain and cold in previous meets this season, the Wolverines had to change their preparations for the 70-degree weather at La Conner. "We had to wear sunglasses because so many of them had white legs," Hertel joked.
