Friday Harbor sluggers
make repeat state appearance

Friday Harbor’s speedy base runners took advantage of a pair of wild pitches to score the winning run and an insurance run during a 3-1 victory over Bellevue Christian Saturday, May 13. With the Tri-Distirct Tournament win, the Wolverines make their second Elite Eight appearance and will play Toledo in the State Class A Quarter-Finals game at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 20 in Winlock.

"It was a good game," said Friday Harbor catcher Charlie Herbert, who went 2-for-3 for last year’s Class A runner-up. "They were a really good and this prepares us for what’s coming up. It’s fun to go back to state."

The Wolverines scattered five hits, but the lack of slugging in the narrow victory didn’t surprise senior Noah Waldron, who scored the go-ahead run while a courtesy runner. "That’s how our team wins," he said.

Tyler Williams stretched his record to 10-0 by fanning 11 Viking batters. The Friday Harbor junior allowed only two hits. "It was definitely my best game all year," he said.

Williams hit a one-out single in the fifth to start Friday Harbor’s rally. Waldron replaced him at first. Forrest Hartford reached base on balls and so did Bret Bartmasser. The Vikings’ starter hurled a wild pitch and Waldron scored. Hartford went to third and scored on a subsequent errant hurl.

Bellevue Christian scored their sole run in the first after Joey Hughes singled, advanced to third and went home on a wild pitch.

Friday Harbor tied the game in the second. Herbert rapped a base hit and scored after Bellevue Christian gave up three walks.

The Wolverines improved to 14-2 for the season. Bellevue Christian, the No. 2 Chinook League team, finished 12-6.

In the quarter-finals, Friday Harbor plays the top team from District No. 4. That district winner won’t be known until Tuesday. The quarter-finals winner advances to the Final Four in Yakima Friday and Saturday, May 26-27.

Loggers forfeit; Wolverines claim Northwest A League baseball title

The wait is over: Friday Harbor reigns as the Northwest A League baseball champ. The Wolverines will host Bellevue Christian at noon Saturday, May 13 in the first round of the Tri-District playoffs.

Friday Harbor, 10-2 in league, needed the win to clinch the conference crown outright. Rain prevented Darrington and Friday Harbor from playing Wednesday and Thursday. Darrington’s soaked field was considered unsafe for play today, Friday, and the 4-6 Loggers also could not line up transportation to a neutral site.

Darrington’s forfeit made a protest of Friday Harbor’s 8-1 win over Orcas May 5 moot. The Vikings, who disputed a call in the fifth inning when the Wolverines led 5-1, dropped their challenge. If Friday Harbor had played Darrington and lost, the Wolverines would’ve replayed the disputed portion of the Orcas game.

Wolverines need one more win
for league title

Friday Harbor appeared to have clinched the Northwest A League Baseball title with an 8-1 win at Orcas May 5, but a disputed call may extend the Wolverines’ regular season. Orcas successfully protested the game against their cross-water foes, so now Friday Harbor must beat Darrington today, May 11, (game was originally scheduled for May 10 but was rained-out) to avoid a do-over with the Vikings.

The Wolverines lead the conference with a 9-2 record. Orcas finished second with a 7-5 record. Technically, the teams still have a chance of tying for first place. If the Wolverines happen to lose to Darrington (4-6), they must resume the Orcas game at the point of the disputed call, which the Viking coaches argued the botched call devastated their team’s spirit.

League officials upheld the Vikings’ protest on May 9, saying an umpire incorrectly awarded an extra base to a Friday Harbor player. Friday Harbor will be up 6-1 in the top of the fifth inning if the game is partially replayed.

If the Wolverines beat the Loggers, they will host a playoff game on Saturday, May 13 or Tuesday, May 16. They will meet the No. 2 Chinook League team, which is not yet determined.

Dave Woldvedt and Jacob Ross rapped doubles for the Wolverines. Tyler Williams upped his record to 9-0, if the win stands.

Friday Harbor could’ve won the league outright against La Conner May 3, but the Braves spoiled the Wolverines’ undefeated home season. The Wolverines allowed three unearned runs in the 3-2 loss.

Forrest Hartford pitched a three-hitter for Friday Harbor.

Wolverine baseball team works overtime to avoid second loss

Archbishop Thomas Murphy led Friday Harbor 4-0 April 25, but the Wolverines rallied for a run in the fifth and sixth innings and two runs in the seventh to tie the game. The Wolverines scored three in the extra inning for a 7-4 win.

Brett Bartmasser and Charley Herbert each rapped a double for the Wolverines. Forrest Hartford earned the win.

Friday Harbor improves to 8-1 in Northwest A League play and 11-1 overall. Archbishop Murphy went to 3-6 and 5-6.

Williams ups
record to 7-0

Tyler Williams continues to frustrate Northwest A League hitters. The Wolverine hurler struck out nine Coupeville batters while giving up three hits over five innings during a 10-2 win Friday, April 21.

Williams kept his ERA under 1.00 -- .98 over 43 innings – and upped his record to 7-0 plus one save. The junior, also leading the Wolverines in hitting with a .472 average, rapped a hit and reached base on balls also. Williams ranks second in slugging. Team leader Jordan Ross, who drove in two runs against Coupeville, boasts a .667 percentage and Williams has a .583.

Charley Herbert had two RBI against Coupeville and Forrest Hartford pitched two hitless innings in relief.

Coupeville allowed eight walks and six hits.

Friday Harbor improves to 7-1 in league and 10-1 overall.

Friday Harbor avenges diamond loss

The Wolverine baseball team had plenty of incentive to beat Concrete in a home contest Saturday, April 15. The Lions blanked the Wolverines' 6-0 on April 7, spoiling Friday Harbor's hopes of an undefeated season.

Friday Harbor made clear the loss was not typical by battering Concrete 10-2 in the second meeting. Tyler Williams earned the win and Forrest Hartford pitched in relief.

The victory boosts the Wolverines' Northwest A League standing to a conference-leading 6-1 and their overall record to 9-1. Friday Harbor leads Concrete by 2 1/2 games.

Friday Harbor was to host La Conner Friday, April 14 but that contest was rained out. It has been rescheduled for May 3.

Concrete snaps FH sluggers' streak

Friday Harbor's boys baseball team struggled at the plate Friday, April 7 and the host Concrete Lions capitalized, shutting out the previously unbeaten Wolverines 6-0.

The Lions outhit the Wolverines 6-2. "Every time we hit the ball hard it went right to them," said Friday Harbor coach Rich Warin.

Friday Harbor remains atop of the Northwest A League with a 5-1 record. The Wolverines, 8-1 overall, host LaConner at 4:15 p.m. Friday, April 14.

Wolverine batters blast Vikings 12-2

Sophomore Adam Posenjak, the Wolverine baseball team’s ninth hitter, smacked the first home run of his baseball career in the Wolverines’ 12-2 whipping of Orcas Tuesday, April 4. He lofted a pitch high above left field and received some breezy help.

"I made some solid contact, there was a little wind and it went away," said a smiling Posenjak after the victory, decided by the 10-run rule in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Wolverines connected for 10 hits, seven more than the Vikings who struggled against Friday Harbor ace Tyler Williams.

Friday Harbor improved to 5-0 in Northwest A League play and 8-0 overall.

Wolverine sluggers roll to 7-0 start

Friday Harbor's baseball team notched two non-league wins last weekend, upping their record to 7-0. The Wolverines shut out Shoreline Christian 10-0 Friday, March 31 and rallied for a 11-7 win over Snohomish County Christian Saturday, April 1.

Forrest Hartford hurled nine strikeouts in five innings against Shoreline and Collin Brennan struck out two Crusaders in relief.

Snohomish County Christian went up 5-1 until the Wolverines scored six runs in the bottom of third inning. The Lions added another run but Jacob Ross rapped a two-run homer to put the Wolverines ahead 9-7. Friday Harbor added two more runs.

Hartford went 3-for-4 with a double and 3 RBI.

Wolverines win 5-0; Williams hurls another one-hitter

If not for Matt Farely's single in the fifth inning, Friday Harbor pitcher Tyler Williams would have thrown a no-hitter against Darrington March 28. Williams and the Wolverines settled instead for a shut out in the league game.

Williams drove in the winning run: His first-inning single sent Jacob Ross, who had reached base on balls, home. That one run was all the Wolverines needed for the victory before the hometown crowd, but they added four more.

After Collin Brennan tripled in the second inning and Ashley Gosselin scored on David Woldvedt's double.

Friday Harbor added three more runs in the fifth. Williams singled home Jacob Ross, who reached base on an error. Gosselin, a pinch runner for Williams, scored after a infield error. The Loggers' centerfielder misplayed a Brennan's fly ball and Forrest Hartford, who had rapped a base hit, went home.

In notching the one-hitter, Williams fanned seven Loggers.

"Our strength is our pitching and our defense," Friday Harbor coach Rich Warin said.

Friday Harbor improves to 4-0 in league and 5 -0 overall. They host Shoreline Christian Friday, March 31.

Friday Harbor sluggers remain unbeaten

The Wolverine baseball squad improved to 4-0 with a 12-9 non-league win at Snohomish County Christian March 25. One day earlier Forrest Hartford drove in four runs off two singles and scored another as Friday Harbor pummeled visiting Archbishop Thomas Murphy 14-4 March 24. Hartford also closed for Tyler Williams, who pitched his third victory.

Friday Harbor moved to 2-0 in Northwest A League play.

Hartford rapped a base hit in the first inning against Archbishop Murphy, sending Jacob Ross, who had singled, and Jordan Ross, who reached base on balls, home. The Wildcats tied the game in the top of the second.

Friday Harbor went up 6-2 in the fourth. The Wolverines loaded the bases after Charlie Herbert walked, Jacob Ross hit another base hit, and Jordan Ross reached base on balls. Bret Bartmasser squibbed an infield hit, and pinch-runner Noah Waldron scored. Tyler Williams drove in a run on a ground-out before Hartford hit his second two-RBI single of the game.

The Wolverines scored three more in the fourth. Williams' double drove in Bartmasser. Posenjak singled home Williams and then scored on an infield out.

Archbishop Murphy added two in the sixth, cutting the Wolverines' lead to 9-4, but Friday Harbor erupted for five more runs in the bottom of the inning. John Mason singled and Hartford reached base on balls. They advanced on a passed ball and Collin Brennan doubled, driving them home. Jason Garcia followed with another two-bagger, scoring Brennan. Jordan Ross hit a single, sending Garcia home and giving the Wolverines a 10-run margin. (High school games are called if a team is winning by 10 runs after the fifth inning.)

Friday Harbor starts a four-game home stand by hosting Darrington at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 28.

Wolverines whip Wolves in home opener

Friday Harbor's baseball team pounded Coupeville 8-1 Tuesday, March 21 in a game called due to darkness in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Tyler Williams hurled his seocond win of the season and Jacob Ross rapped a triple.

The Wolverines are 2-0 overall and in league play.

Wolverine sluggers blast Braves

Friday Harbor junior Tyler Williams hurled a one-hitter against LaConner Wednesday and the Wolverine batters did their part, outscoring the Braves 10-0 in the season opener.

The Wolverines, who finished second in Class A last year, began 2000 with back-to-back doubles by sophomore Jacob Ross and senior Jordan Ross. "It was a great start to the season," said Friday Harbor coach Rich Warin.

The Wolverines scored two more in the first, six in the sixth and one in the seventh. Jacob Ross, John Cornell and Colin Brennan finished with two hits apiece.

"We played good defense," Warin said. "Colin made a running catch in deep right center to end the game."

A contest scheduled at Shoreline Christian was rained out Friday. The Wolverines’ first home contest will be against Coupeville at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 21.
