Loggers forfeit; Wolverines claim Northwest A League baseball titleThe wait is over: Friday Harbor reigns as the Northwest A League baseball champ. The Wolverines will host Bellevue Christian at noon Saturday, May 13 in the first round of the Tri-District playoffs. Friday Harbor, 10-2 in league, needed the win to clinch the conference crown outright. Rain prevented Darrington and Friday Harbor from playing Wednesday and Thursday. Darrington’s soaked field was considered unsafe for play today, Friday, and the 4-6 Loggers also could not line up transportation to a neutral site. Darrington’s forfeit made a protest of Friday Harbor’s 8-1 win over Orcas May 5 moot. The Vikings, who disputed a call in the fifth inning when the Wolverines led 5-1, dropped their challenge. If Friday Harbor had played Darrington and lost, the Wolverines would’ve replayed the disputed portion of the Orcas game. Wolverines need one more win

Wolverines win 5-0; Williams hurls another one-hitterIf not for Matt Farely's single in the fifth inning, Friday Harbor pitcher Tyler Williams would have thrown a no-hitter against Darrington March 28. Williams and the Wolverines settled instead for a shut out in the league game. Williams drove in the winning run: His first-inning single sent Jacob Ross, who had reached base on balls, home. That one run was all the Wolverines needed for the victory before the hometown crowd, but they added four more. After Collin Brennan tripled in the second inning and Ashley Gosselin scored on David Woldvedt's double. Friday Harbor added three more runs in the fifth. Williams singled home Jacob Ross, who reached base on an error. Gosselin, a pinch runner for Williams, scored after a infield error. The Loggers' centerfielder misplayed a Brennan's fly ball and Forrest Hartford, who had rapped a base hit, went home. In notching the one-hitter, Williams fanned seven Loggers. "Our strength is our pitching and our defense," Friday Harbor coach Rich Warin said. Friday Harbor improves to 4-0 in league and 5 -0 overall. They host Shoreline Christian Friday, March 31. The Wildcats tied the game in the top of the second. Friday Harbor went up 6-2 in the fourth. The Wolverines loaded the bases after Charlie Herbert walked, Jacob Ross hit another base hit, and Jordan Ross reached base on balls. The Wolverines, who finished second in Class A last year, began 2000 with back-to-back doubles by sophomore Jacob Ross and senior Jordan Ross. "It was a great start to the season," said Friday Harbor coach Rich Warin. The Wolverines scored two more in the first, six in the sixth and one in the seventh. Jacob Ross, John Cornell and Colin Brennan finished with two hits apiece. "We played good defense," Warin said. "Colin made a running catch in deep right center to end the game." A contest scheduled at Shoreline Christian was rained out Friday. The Wolverines’ first home contest will be against Coupeville at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 21. | ||
