Loggers eliminate Wolverines

posted 05/20/01
Darrington scored seven runs in the sixth inning to defeat Friday Harbor 8-4 in a Class A State Tournament Quarterfinal in Anacortes Saturday, May 19.

"That was the hardest inning of my six years of high school baseball," said Friday Harbor coach Rich Warin.

"This season came to too much of an abrupt end. It's hard to believe it's over," Warin added.

The Loggers, who the Wolverines defeated twice in Northwest A League play, advance to the semi-finals in Yakima and the Wolverines finish their season 15-4.

Friday Harbor went up 2-0 in the first inning. Jacob Ross singled and stole second. John Cornell rapped a base hit, scoring Ross. Tyler Williams hit into a fielder's choice and Fletcher Vynne singled, driving in Cornell.

With two outs in the third innning, Friday Harbor's Adam Posenjak reached base on balls, stole second and advanced to third after Ross rapped a single. Cornell cracked a triple, driving in Posenjak and Ross.

The Wolverines led 4-1 in the top of the sixth and were six outs away from their third consecutive trip to the Class A State semi-finals. The Loggers hit six singles in the inning, including several shallow bloops into outfield before Williams struck out the final two batters.

Warin thanked the Friday Harbor fans who made the trip to mainland to cheer on the Wolverines in postseason play. "We had the most support of any team," he noted.

Friday Harbor out-slugs Bellevue Christian

posted 05/14/01
Senior Tyler Williams drove in three runs, including the tying and go-ahead ones in the Friday Harbor baseball team’s 10-6 extra-inning victory over Bellevue Christian, Saturday May 12 in Everett Memorial Stadium. Williams also earned the win, giving up no unearned runs and shutting down the hot-hitting Vikings in the last three innings.

"I’m amazed, truly amazed," said Friday Harbor senior John Cornell. "We were down twice and kept coming back. This team never gives up."

"That was our best hitting of the year," Friday Harbor coach Rich Warin said of the Wolverines’ 14-hit performance. "It was our best outing of the year."

Friday Harbor also played stellar defense, not making an error against what Cornell called "the best hitters we’ve ever seen." Meanwhile, Bellevue Christian committed six miscues.

The Wolverines advance as a No. 1 seed in the Class A State Quarter-finals. They next play Northwest A League foe Darrington Saturday, May 19 in Anacortes. The Wolverines twice beat the Loggers in Northwest A League play, edging them for the conference crown. Darrington came from behind – the Loggers scored three runs in the seventh inning and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the inning -- to beat Seattle Christian May 12.

Trailing Bellevue Christian by two runs in the sixth inning, Friday Harbor knotted the game at 6-6. Jacob Ross rapped a base hit, went to third on a double by John Cornell and scored on a passed ball. Williams singled home Cornell.

The Vikings and Wolverines each reached base only once in the next inning and a half. After Ross singled up the middle and Cornell reached base on a bunt, Williams put Friday Harbor up 8-2 on a triple over the centerfielder’s head. Fletcher Vynne cracked a base hit, driving home Williams and then scored on a single by Brett Bartmasser.

Bellevue Christian went down 1, 2, 3 in the bottom of the eighth.

"Everything was just going right for us except the first inning," Cornell concluded.

Four of Bellevue Christian’s first five batters smacked hits in the first inning, putting the Vikings up 3-0. Friday Harbor scored a run in third on Cornell’s sacrifice fly.

The Wolverines gained a 4-3 lead in the fifth on a two-out rally. Vynne reached base on balls and scored on an error after Charlie Herbert singled. Adam Posenjak was safe on an error and Herbert scored. Bartmasser cracked a double, sending Posenjak home.

Bellevue Christian’s regained the lead in the bottom of the inning.

Both teams advance to the Class A State Quarter-finals, but the winner receives a better seed.

Darrington, the Northwest No. 2, and Seattle Lutheran, Chinook No. 2, meet at 11 a.m. Saturday in a loser-out game. The Friday Harbor-Bellevue Christian contest follows 30 minutes after the final out of the early game.

Russ Reyes allowed only one earned run over five innings during steady rain. "Russ did a great job for how muddy it was, " Friday Harbor coach Rich Warin said.

Reyes also drove in half of the Wolverines' runs on two singles and a double. Jacob Ross cracked a double and had an RBI and Tyler Williams also had a two-bagger. Fletcher Vynne had two RBI and "a good defensive game " and Jason Garcia connected for two hits, Warin said.

Tyler Williams allowed only two hits while striking out nine batters as Friday Harbor shaved Concrete 2-1 in an extra-inning road game Wednesday, May 2. With the win, the Wolverines clinched their third consecutive Northwest A League title.

Russ Reyes scored the winning run after reaching base on a single. He advanced home on an error.

Friday Harbor (9-2) closes the regular season at home at 4:30 p.m. today against Archbishop Murphy (4-6). A Wolverine victory would dash second-place Darrington’s (6-3) hopes of finishing tied with Friday Harbor. The Wolverines gained the edge for the conference crown by beating the Loggers in both meetings this season.

The Wolverines, 13-3 overall, start postseason action next Saturday, May 12 in the Tri-District Tournament.

Wolverines widen lead over Loggers

Senior Tyler Williams fanned 10 Darrington batters and Russ Reyes belted a homer as the Friday Harbor baseball team knocked back the Loggers 7-3 Friday, April 27.

"The intensity is back," said Friday Harbor coach Rich Warin, who noted this week’s practices were the best of the season for the Wolverines. "Everybody worked hard and it showed."

With the home win over the Loggers (5-3), the Wolverines (8-2) move closer toward clinching the Northwest A League title. A victory in their final two games – at Concrete Tuesday, May 1 or at home against Archbishop Murphy Friday, May 4—would guarantee the Wolverines at least a share of the conference crown.

Friday Harbor scored a run in the first inning and Darrington tied the game in the second. The Wolverines went up 4-1 in the second and increased their lead to 7-1 in the fifth. Darrington’s Jordan Padgett hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh.

Wolverines escape Wolves

"Patience," declared David Woldvedt after he held his bat and sent game-winning run home during Friday Harbor's 4-3 victory over Coupeville Wednesday, April 18.

Friday Harbor upped its Northwest A League record to 7-1 with the victory over the Wolves, the only team to beat the Wolverines in conference play. The win puts Friday Harbor two games up on second-place Darrington.

Coupeville's misfortune -- the Wolves' starter left in the sixth after crumpling to the mound with an injury to his throwing arm -- appeared to be Friday Harbor's gain. However, with the Wolverines leading 3-1 going into the seventh inning, the Wolves knotted the game on a two-run homer that cleared the center field fence. In the seventh inning, Brett Bartmasser reached on balls, Charlie Herbert reached on an errant fielder's choice, Andrew Westphalen was intentionally walked before Woldvedt stood firm.

Tyler Williams, who didn't give up a hit in the first three innings, drove in the first run of the game in the third. Fletcher Vynne notched the second run of the inning on a walk.

John Cornell added a run in the fourth on a bizarre play. With two outs, he dove head first into first base and was safe after the Coupeville first baseman dropped the ball. Cornell thought he was called out and started back toward the dugout. Meanwhile, Adam Posenjak, singled, stole second and advanced to third on walks of Westphalen and Jacob Ross, crossed the plate before the tag on Cornell.

Jason Garcia took the mound after Williams. Russ Reyes pitched out of a two-out, bases-loaded jam in the top of the sixth by throwing three strikes for the final out. Ross hurled the seventh for the Wolverines.

Limiting Williams to three frames allows him to start Friday when the Wolverines travel to third-place La Conner.
