Scoring error discovered: Friday Harbor golfers are second in Tri-District; Cowell and Phelan advance to stateposted 05/09/01
Senior William Shuman shot the best round of his high school career at the Tri-District Tournament Title Tuesday, May 8 at High Cedars Golf Course. Freshman Matt Cowell earned a trip to the Class A State Tournament and senior Ryan Phelan will make a return trip after surviving a two-hole sudden-death playoff. "William and Nick had very solid games," said Friday Harbor coach Dave Anderson. "What a great way for William to end his senior year, his high school career." Phelan and four other golfers finished at 82, forcing a playoff for four state berths. Three entrants shot par but Phelan and John Wilcox, Archbishop Murphy’s No. 1 golfer, bogeyed. Sophomore Kohl Metzger-Bell also lended a major boost, shooting 49 on the front nine and a 43 on the back nine and finishing with his best score of high school competition. His PR not only assisted with the Wolverines team victory, it also earned Metzger-Bell his varsity letter. In girls action, Friday Harbor freshman Ashley Wright finished eighth and advanced to the Tri-District Tournament Wednesday, May 10. Orcas placed third in the league meet. The Wolverines’ Matt Cowell and Ryan Phelan both shot an 82 and finished second and fourth. Friday Harbor’s Justin Benz led all players with a 39. Other scorers for the Wolverines were: Nick Schuman 45; Ryan Phelan 46; William Shuman 46; and Kohl Metzger-Bell 53. Chris Bennet paced Orcas with a 41. The other Viking scorers were Arlen Plaister 44; Adam Shafer 51; Dan Vierthaler 53; and Chris Resa 63. Friday Harbor's Justin Benz captured medalist honors by shooting a 35 for par over nine holes. Phelan finished one shot back, Matt Cowell two strokes off the leader and Shuman was five shots behind. Nick Schuman had a 43. Though his score was not used, Kohl Metzger-Bell continued his improvement, finishing with a 45. The Wolverines improve to 8-0 this season.
