Scoring error discovered: Friday Harbor golfers are second in Tri-District; Cowell and Phelan advance to state

A scoring error was discovered today, and instead of winning the Tri-District Tournament, Friday Harbor Golf Team came in second by one half point behind Charles Wright Academy.
Senior William Shuman shot the best round of his high school career at the Tri-District Tournament Title Tuesday, May 8 at High Cedars Golf Course. Freshman Matt Cowell earned a trip to the Class A State Tournament and senior Ryan Phelan will make a return trip after surviving a two-hole sudden-death playoff.
"William and Nick had very solid games," said Friday Harbor coach Dave Anderson. "What a great way for William to end his senior year, his high school career."
Phelan and four other golfers finished at 82, forcing a playoff for four state berths. Three entrants shot par but Phelan and John Wilcox, Archbishop Murphy’s No. 1 golfer, bogeyed. With a gallery of more than 30 watching, Phelan two-putted for par while Wilcox double bogeyed.
Benz sinks hole-in-one; Friday Harbor recaptures league title

Junior Justin Benz earned medalist honors at the Northwest A League Championships with some flair, sinking a hole-in-one on hole 16. Benz’s 79 on Avalon Golf Course helped power Friday Harbor’s boys golf team past Archbishop Murphy 425-432 for the conference crown.
Sophomore Kohl Metzger-Bell also lended a major boost, shooting 49 on the front nine and a 43 on the back nine and finishing with his best score of high school competition. His PR not only assisted with the Wolverines team victory, it also earned Metzger-Bell his varsity letter.
In girls action, Friday Harbor freshman Ashley Wright finished eighth and advanced to the Tri-District Tournament Wednesday, May 10.
Orcas placed third in the league meet.
The Wolverines’ Matt Cowell and Ryan Phelan both shot an 82 and finished second and fourth. Friday Harbor has only one night to rest their bones and shine up their sticks: The team competes in the Tri-District Meet at High Cedars Golf Course today.
Friday Harbor linksters win 38th straight league match

With a 229-252 victory over Orcas Friday, May 4 at San Juan Golf Country Club, the Wolverine boys golf team finished the 2001 season unbeaten in league play. The win also stretches Friday Harbor’s conference winning streak to 38.
Friday Harbor’s Justin Benz led all players with a 39. Other scorers for the Wolverines were: Nick Schuman 45; Ryan Phelan 46; William Shuman 46; and Kohl Metzger-Bell 53.
Chris Bennet paced Orcas with a 41. The other Viking scorers were Arlen Plaister 44; Adam Shafer 51; Dan Vierthaler 53; and Chris Resa 63.

Ryan Phelan and William Shuman shot their best rounds as Wolverines in Friday Harbor's 191-252 victory over La Conner at Similk Beach Golf Course Thursday, April 26.
Friday Harbor's Justin Benz captured medalist honors by shooting a 35 for par over nine holes. Phelan finished one shot back, Matt Cowell two strokes off the leader and Shuman was five shots behind. Nick Schuman had a 43. Though his score was not used, Kohl Metzger-Bell continued his improvement, finishing with a 45.
The Wolverines improve to 8-0 this season.
Friday Harbor lops Lopez
The Wolverine linksters won their seventh straight match of 2001, defeating Lopez 216-265 April 12.

Justin Benz and Matt Cowell each shot a 37 at San Juan Golf and Country Club, Friday April 6 and shared medalist honors in the Wolverines’ 213-231 win over Archbishop Murphy.
Nick Schuman finished with a 45 for the Wolverines, Ryan Phelan hit a 46. Kohl Metzger-Bell and William Shuman shot 48 apiece.
With the Northwest A League victory, the Wolverines improve to 4-0 in conference and 6-0 overall.

Friday Harbor undershot Orcas 229-260 in a road conference match Friday, March 30.
Justin Benz led all golfers with a 39. Matt Cowell finished two strokes off the pace and Ryan Phelan hit a 44. William Shuman had a 47 and Kohl Metzger-Bell a 56.
Friday Harbor remains unbeaten in five outings.

in Mount Baker match

Freshman Matt Cowell garnered medalist honors Saturday, March 24 by shooting a 76 in Friday Harbor's 408-426 over Mount Baker.
The Wolverines' non-league match at San Juan Golf & Country Club was limited to 17 holes as the Mounties needed to catch a ferry. Other scorers for Friday Harbor were: Justin Benz 78; Ryan Phelan 79; Nick Schuman 87; and William Shuman 88.
Friday Harbor improved to 4-0 this season after the victory over the Class 2A Mounties.
Wolverines beat Braves by 100 strokes
Friday Harbor posted its second Northwest League win by using 100 less strokes than La Conner in a home match Thursday, March 22. Justin Benz earned medalist honors for the Wolverines.
Wolverine golfers resume league winning streak

Friday Harbor boys golf team started conference play Friday, March 16 just like the last three years -- with a victory. A 12-stroke win over Archbishop Murphy Friday extends the Wolverines league match winning streak to 37.
Justin Benz shot a 37 to earn medalist honors against the Wildcats in the away match. Friday Harbor's Matt Cowell and Ryan Phelan hit 44 and Nick Schuman and William Shuman shot 47.
The Wolverines also earned a season-opening, non-conference 221-264 away win over Lakewood on March 13. Benz and Cowell used 37 strokes apiece and shared the medalist spot. Phelan and Schuman each hit 47 and Shuman had a 57.
