Friday Harbor Men’s Golf Team wins first match of the year against Cedar Park Christian and they didn’t have to use Kendra Meeker’s score of 39.

What a headline: Five players on the team posted personal best for the 2013 golf season yesterday. Jess Hargrove lead the team with a 44, which has to be 7 shots better than any score he has posted this season. Close behind was Jesse Kowolitz with a 47.

This is the second match in a row that Jesse has set a new personal best. Riley Rousar was next with a 49. Over spring break he picked up the coach’s bad habit of flipping the wrist while trying to chip the ball on the green.

After the round it only took him a couple practice shots to discover what had gone wrong. I wish I could fix myself that fast. Keegan Hebert posted his best score of the season with a fine 52 to round out the top four golfers. These four scores were just enough to give Friday Harbor the win with a total of 192 compared with Cedar Park at 193.

My old college coach used to say, “Every shot counts, don’t ever give up”, how true it is on a wet Thursday on San Juan Island.

Right on the heels of the top four were the rest of the men’s team. Xander Chriton shot his third 53 for the season. Close behind was Wade Tracy with a 54. Eli Baker is in the middle of a swing correction and is struggling to find something that works for him, he posted a 59.

Cedar Park’s Ben Reidy posted the low score for the men with a 42.

Now we come to Kendra Meeker. She is still playing with a leg brace and recovering from ACL surgery earlier this year. She limped in with a 39, breaking 40 for the first time this year on our home course. Devan Rousar posted a 60 for the second lowest woman’s score of the day.

Our next match will be Monday against Orcas here at San Juan Golf Club. And to think the majority of these kids couldn’t break 60 less than a month ago. I am so excited for them to see how their hard work is starting to pay off. Let’s keep our fingers crossed; maybe this is the beginning of something new.

Last Friday, Kendra won first place in the League Tournament held at the tough Gallery Golf Club on Whidbey Island. Kendra fired a 93 to beat the next best sore by 10 shots. Only two men in the tournament beat her score and one of them was Riley Rouser. Riley posted an 92 to come in second place in the men’s division.

Body language tells it all

As the final groups approached the 9th green at San Juan Golf Club, I could tell it wasn’t going to be a good day. The sun was out, there was no wind and our golfers were walking with their heads down, looking like they had just been beaten up.

I wish I could report that we took Lopez to the cleaners, however they showed up with their A game and gave our Friday Harbor golfers a lesson in ball management. Lopez Senior Michael Reeve was co-medalist with Friday Harbor’s Kendra Meeker, both shooting 42s.
