Softball team to forfeit gamesWith several players benched because of disciplinary reasons, the Friday Harbor softball team wasn't able to field a team against Coupeville on March 21. Friday Harbor High School's co-curricular code dictates the athletes sit out two weeks, so a total of five games, including three Northwest A League contests, will be cancelled.
Wolverine softball squad clips LaConner, Granite FallsVic Woodward began his first season as the Wolverines’ softball coach with two victory’s: His team edged LaConner 3-1 in a road season opener Wednesday and held back Granite Falls 7-4 Friday in their first home game of the season. Freshman Melissa Peacock, throwing in her first varsity game, earned the win against the Braves and kept composed when the Tigers rallied for three runs in the sixth inning. "Melissa did a great job for her first time pitching," said Woodward of Peacock’s first varsity appearance. Woodward was pleased with Peacock’s response after falling behind in the count against some Granite Falls batters. "She continued to come back and put pressure on the hitter," Woodward said. "I’m really impressed with Melissa." Sophomore Leah Evans rapped game-winning hits in both contests. She smacked an RBI triple against LaConner, and a two-run triple and a one-run single against Granite Falls. "Leah’s really hitting the ball," Woodward said. Friday Harbor scored in the second against the Braves when junior Angela Williams drove in sophomore Summer Ausilio, who had singled. Freshman Sissy Carlton, who reached base on balls, went home after Evans’ three-bagger. The Wolverines’ and Braves added one in the sixth. Granite Falls scored one run in the second before Friday Harbor exploded for three in the fourth and four in the fifth. Peacock rapped two base hits and drove in a run, Carlton hit two singles. Granite Falls rallied three runs in the sixth before Williams snagged a line drive, robbing a Granite Falls hitter of extra bases and a couple of runs. "We continue to play good defense," Woodward said. "Our bats will come around." The Wolverines host Coupeville at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 21.
