Wolverine bats sleep before second game flurry

Friday Harbor’s softball team "struggled mightily at the plate" in a 2-1 loss to Lynden Saturday, May 12, said Friday Harbor coach Vic Woodward. The Wolverines’ sticks sizzled in the second contest of a non-league doubleheader, though -- the Wolverines scorched the Lions 16-10 in their final game of the regular season.
The rubber match next Saturday between Friday Harbor and Lynden will be for more than bragging rights: The winner of the playoff game will be a victory away from a state tourney berth.
Tri-District action begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19 at Skagit Valley Play Fields. Friday Harbor and Lynden play at 10 a.m. in the A Bracket and Concrete meets Tacoma Baptist in the B Bracket. Seattle Christian and Coupeville battle in the second A Bracket game at 11:30 a.m. and Bellevue Christian takes on the winner of a pigtail game between Archbishop Murphy and Sedro-Woolley. Semi-final and consolation games start at 1 p.m.
The top five Tri-District finishers advance to the Slowpitch State Tournament in Spokane May 25-26.
Friday Harbor, which overpowered most of its opponents this season, managed only six hits in the first game against Lynden. However, the Wolverines’ defense limited the Lions to nine hits.
"We played great defense in both games," Woodward said.
The Wolverines tripled their hit-output in the second contest against the Lions. They went up 1-0 in the first inning on singles by Katie Carlton and Leah Evans.
Friday Harbor’s bats blistered Lynden for 12 hits and 11 runs in the third inning. Summer Auslio led the Wolverine offensive attack by cracking a double and triple. Katie Carlton contributed a single and triple, Evans rapped a base hit, Katie Earley homered and Erica Percich hit a three-bagger.
Lynden scored four runs in the bottom of the third, one in the fourth, and two in the fifth to close the gap to 12-8. Friday Harbor responded with two runs in each the sixth and seventh before stemming Lynden’s rally at two in the final half-frame.

The Northwest League Class A Division crown will likely be decided Tuesday, May 8 when the Wolverines travel to the Lions’ den Tuesday, May 8.
"That was a great slowpitch game .... That was a pretty sweet win," said Friday Harbor coach Vic Woodward of the rare victory over the Vikings.
Rose Sharp slapped a solo homer in the first inning and the Vikings added two more in the second. Friday Harbor went up 5-3 in the fourth off four consecutive hits. Summer Ausilio, Katie Carlton, Kiyo Peterman and Jessica Peacock and a triple by Leah Evans.

Friday Harbor softball team continues onslaught
posted 04/14/01
The conference-leading Friday Harbor softball team notched victories 8 and 9 this week by hammering Darrington 16-4 in five innings Thursday and battering La Conner 9-1 the next day.
Jessica Peacock and Leah Evans whacked doubles for the Wolverines in their chopping of the Darrington Loggers. With the win, Friday Harbor completed the first half of Northwest A League play 6-1.
Friday Harbor’s "solid defense" kept La Conner’s offense in check until the Wolverines’ bats broke out in the fifth inning, said Friday Harbor coach Vic Woodward. The defensive highlight was a "perfect strike" from right fielder Erica Percich to Leah Evans to second baseman Katie Earley, robbing a Brave runner of a double.
The Wolverines led 3-1 before adding four in the fifth through "timely" hits, Woodward said. Summer Ausilio and Katie Carlton each went 3-for-4 with a double. Evans, Melissa Peacock and Jessica Peacock also went 3-for-4.
Melissa Peacock continued her dominance from the mound, giving up no bases on balls while moving the ball "all around the plate," Woodward said. Peacock has allowed only six walks since the start of the season.
Friday Harbor leads the Northwest A League with a 6-1 record.
Earley’s 7th-inning 3-bagger lifts Friday Harbor over Concrete
Senior Katie Earley cranked a triple in the bottom of the seventh inning, driving in the winning run in the Friday Harbor softball team’s 13-12 squeaker over Concrete Friday, April 6. The conference-leading Wolverines (4-1) move one-half game ahead of the (3-1) Lions in the Northwest A League standings.
Friday Harbor led 12-6, before a six-run rally by the Lions in the top of the seventh. After a pop-out, Erica Percich belted the ball up the middle for a single.
Earley, who doesn't have many extra-base hits this season, was thinking long-ball, even with the count 3-2. "I wanted it to go to the fence," she said.
Earley came close to her goal: She rocketed the ball over the head of Concrete's left-center fielder. The ball bounced and hit the fence 250 feet from the plate, allowing plenty of time for. Percich to cross the plate standing. "That ball was crushed," said Friday Harbor coach Vic Woodward.
Hits by Summer Ausilio, Katie Carlton, Kiyo Peterman and Leah Evans propelled the Wolverines to a 7-1 lead early in the game.
Softball schedule change:
The rained out game at Darrington has been rescheduled for April 12.
Vikings halt Wolverine winning streak

Orcas took advantage of a half-dozen Friday Harbor errors and handed the Wolverines their first loss of the season, Tuesday, April 3. The Vikings trimmed their cross-water rivals 9-7.
"We didn’t hit the ball well and didn’t field it very well," said Friday Harbor coach Vic Woodward. "They (Orcas) hit nice line drives."
Trying a bit too intensely to beat their traditional foes probably contributed to the Wolverines’ committing the errors. "That’s uncharacteristic of the way we’ve been playing," Woodward said.
Friday Harbor is 3-1 in league play and 6-1 overall. Orcas improves to 2-3 in conference action and 4-3 for the season.

Friday Harbor softball squad clobbers Coupeville 25-6
posted 03/22/01
The Friday Harbor softball team didn't 10-run Coupeville in a conference contest Tuesday, March 20: The Wolverine batters cranked out more than 25 hits and nearly 20-runned the Wolves in the 25-6 road victory.
"It was a Hit-A-Thon," Friday Harbor coach Vic Woodward. "Our players were hitting line drives all over the park."
Summer Ausilio came one base shy of hitting for the cycle. Her coach and teammates didn't mind though: The junior led off the game with a solo homer, added a grand slam, another home run, a double and a single. Ausilio drove in seven runs and scored four times while going 5-for-5.
Leah Evans smacked two homers -- a solo and three-run -- and finished 4-for-4 with four RBI.
The hits weren't due to poor fielding by the Wolves. "Those balls were roped," Woodward said.
Melissa Peacock went 3-for-3 with one hit a double while continuing her mastery of the mound, allowing one walk. "She's just getting better and better," her coach said.
Katie Earley was 2-for-2 with a triple and Erica Percich hit 3-for-4. A goal post base robbed Kiyo Peterman of a homer: She finished 3-for-4 and a triple.
The Wolverines, who improve to 2-0 in Northwest A League play and 3-0 overall, have outscored their opponents 57-20. Woodward believes his and assistant coach Kevin Carlton's extra emphasis on hitting in practices is working. "I guess some concepts are getting together there," he said.
Friday Harbor's next chance to slug is 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 24 in a home game against Snohomish County Christian.
