Sooter takes league’s
100 sprint title

Leo Sooter edged Rob Harris of Concrete at the tape to win the 100-meter dash in 11.8 seconds at the Northwest A League Championships May 4. Sooter also finished second in the 200 meter in :24.6.

Friday Harbor lacked standout jumper Nathan Smith but tallied a respectable 64 points. The Wolverine boys finished third, two points behind host Coupeville. Concrete won the meet with 99 points. Archbishop Thomas Murphy was fourth with 52 points and La Conner sixth with 51.

Devan Wilson earned a pair of second places – the 1,600 run in 4:56.2 and the 800 in 2:12.0. Shane Coulter thrust the javelin 144 feet, five inches and finished second and tossed the discus 84-5 and placed third. Tyler Gilfillan also gained a second place by putting the shot 36-7. He finished fourth in the 400 in :55.9.

for Tri-District Meet

Friday Harbor boys take second at Bi-District

Friday Harbor coach Greg Hertel told freshman Nathan Smith to take it easy on his tender knee at the Class A Bi-District Track Meet in La Conner Saturday, May 13. He told the freshman standout to hit Tri-District Meet qualifying marks and then stop. In following Hertel’s instructions, Smith picked up a first, two seconds and third in the field events.

Smith bounded 38 feet, 5.5 inches to win the triple jump. He tossed the discus 97-7 and leaped 19-1.5 in the long jump, good for second-places. Smith finished third in the long jump with a 5-10 effort.

If Smith had been able to push himself, the Wolverine boys would probably be Bi-District champs: Friday Harbor scored 94 team points and finished second behind Concrete, who tallied 100. The other team totals were: Concrete, 90; La Conner, 71; Archbishop Thomas Murphy, 68; and University Prep, 51.

Leo Sooter sprinted to second-place finishes in 100- and 200-meter dashes with 11.6- and 24-second times. Sooter also ran the 400-meter relay with Eric Kristensen, William Cobos and Tyler Gilfillan. The Wolverines won in :48.4.

Gilfillan finished second in the shot put with a 38-0 heave, was fourth in the 400 meter with a :56.9 effort.

Shane Coulter thrust the javelin 143-7, placing third. Devan Wilson finished third in the 800 in 2:10.4 and the Wolverines’ 1,600 meter relay team also earned a third-place in 3:43.5. Jesse Kjolso came in fourth in the 110 high hurdles in :19.2 and Cobos was fifth in the 100 dash in :11.9.

Marina Bull blasts to 400 win

In girls' action, Friday Harbor’s Marina Bull beat the rest of the 400-meter field by a full second. Bull finished in one minute, 7.7 seconds, 1.2 seconds in front of the runner-up.

"Marina won the 400 going away," said Friday Harbor coach Greg Hertel. The sophomore sprinter finished third in the 200 in :28.5.

Marina also came in fourth in a tight 100 race. Deanne Huizenga of La Conner won the event in :12.5. Yashmeen Knox of Coupeville was second in :13.1, Liz Russell of University Prep was third in :13.2 and Bull fourth in :13.3.

Kristen Bull came in fourth in the 200 in :29.4 and Catherine Grosjacques was fourth in the high jump with a 4-2 leap.

Team scores were: La Conner, 134; University Prep, 130; Coupeville, 66; Concrete, 47; Archbishop Thomas Murphy, 43; and Friday Harbor, 33.

All but one of Wolverines qualified for Tri-District, scheduled for noon, Saturday, May 20 at Snohomish High School. "I was really happy. The kids were really happy," Hertel said.

The top two finishers advance from Tri-District to the Class A Championships at Eastern Washington University in Cheney on May 26-27.

Wilson wins 800, 1600

Devan Wilson is posting quicker marks in his senior year. The Friday Harbor runner won the 1,600-meter run in five minutes, 6.75 seconds and led the 800-meter field with a 2:11.45 effort at a five-way meet April 14.

Nathan Smith continued his strong performance in field events, winning the high jump with a five-foot, six-inch leap. He earned a pair of seconds by bounding to a 39-3.5 mark in the triple jump and soaring 19-3 in the long jump. He was also sixth in the shot put with a 37-5 heave.

Leo Sooter zipped to two second-places. He ran the 200 dash in :24.83 and the 100 sprint in :12.13. Chris Jamieson hurled the javelin 112-11, good for third place. Jesse Kjolso finished fifth in the 300 intermediate hurdles in :53.47.

In girls action, Kristen Bull was second in the javelin with a 68-10 throw. Marina Bull ran the 100 meter in :14.2 and placed fifth. Catherine Grosjacques finished fifth in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 1:04.07 and fifth in the 200 dash in 31 seconds.

Evergreen Lutheran scored 155 to win the girls competition. The other scores are: Charles Wright 94, Seattle Lutheran 29, Life Christian 28 and Friday Harbor 9.

The Friday Harbor boys finished third with 71 points. Other team totals are: Charles Wright 114, Evergreen Lutheran 96, Life Christian 41 and Seattle Christian 9.

The Wolverines' 4x400 relay team finished third in :51.07.

Smith finishes 1, 2, 3, 4 at Coupeville meet

Nathan Smith, if playing baseball, would've hit for the cycle April 11 at Coupeville. Track and field are the Friday Harbor freshman's specialty though: Smith won the triple jump, was second in the long jump, third high jump and fourth in 200-meter dash.

Devan Wilson finished second in the 800 and 1600 runs, and the Wolverines came in second in the 400 relay.

In the girls competition, Marina Bulls won the 100 and 400 sprints.

Friday Harbor boys win Lopez meet

Nathan Smith's wins in the high jump and the triple jump and Leo Sooter's first place in the 200-meter dash, and solid efforts by the other Friday Harbor boys scored a convincing team victory at Lopez Friday, April 7.

The Wolverines tallied 109 points, outdistancing second-place finisher Mount Vernon Christian by 25 points.

Smith was the only competitor to clear six feet in the high jump and bounded 38 feet, 1/4-inch in the triple jump. The freshman also finished second in the long jump after leaping 19-1.5 and placed fourth in the discus after tossing the disc 107-5.5.

Sooter broke the 200 sprint's tape at :24.7, beating Ryan Shandera to the tap by five-hundredth of a second. Sooter also helped the Friday Harbor's 400 relay team finish in :48.37, good for a second place.

Devan Wilson placed second in the 1,600-meter run in five minutes, four seconds, and also earned a second in the 800 in 2:16.4.

Taylor Stimpson heaved the shot 35-6 for a third-place finish. Tyler Gilfillan also contributed a third-place performance by running the 400 in :57.65. Eric Kristenson, with a :25.31 run, earned a third in the 200.

Marina Bull wins 100, 400 sprints

The Friendly Isle proved congenial to Friday Harbor's Marina Bull: She won the 100-meter dash in 13.94 seconds and also edged the led the field in the 400, winning in :37.65.

Jenny Bordi finished third in the 300 hurdles in :59.39 and was fourth in the 100 high hurdles in :20.25.

Kristen Bull thrust the javelin 71.5 feet and finished fourth. She also came in sixth in the discus.

The Wolverines were fourth in the 1,200-meter relay.

Mount Vernon Christian won the meet with 115 points.

Smith, Wilson power Wolverine tracksters

A talented freshman and a dedicated senior helped propel the Friday Harbor boys track team to a third-place finish at a league meet in Everett Stadium Saturday, April 1.

Friday Harbor finished one point behind team runner-up and meet host Archbishop Thomas Murphy. Concrete scored 113 points to win the team competition. La Conner was fourth with 83, Coupeville fifth with 67, and Grace Academy sixth with 14.

Rookie Nathan Smith continued to boost his performance in the field events. He leaped 18 feet, two inches to win the long jump and bounded 37-6.5 in a triple jump victory. Smith also cleared 5-6 for a second place in the high jump and twirled the discus 112-5 for a third place.

Senior Devan Wilson ran a personal best five-minute, 1.51 seconds in the 1,600-meter run and finished second. He also placed second in the 800, finishing in 2:16.66.

"Devan just kept working at it," said Friday Harbor coach Greg Hertel. "He’s made steady improvement. He’s just the classic example of ‘Hard Work Pays Off.’"

The Wolverines’ 400 relay team -- Eric Kristenson, William Cobos, Nat Hertel and Tyler Gilfillan – finished second with a :50.57 effort.

Other finishes for the Wolverine boys were: 3. 100 dash, Cobos, 11.63; 3. javelin, Chris Jameson, 114-0; 4. 100 dash, Kristenson, 11.69; 5. Jessee Rjolso, 110 high hurdles, 18.50; 5. triple jump, Ian Patterson, 31-9.25; 5. 200 dash, Kristenson, 25.56; 6. 110 high hurdles, Patterson; 6. 100 dash, Gilfillan, 11.81; 6. 400 run, 58.53; 6. triple jump, Kjolso, 29-1.75.

Marina Bull improved her times in the sprints for the Friday Harbor girls, winning the 100 in 13.47 and the 400 in 1:07.34. She also finished third in the 200 in :30.5.

Jenny Bordi placed third in the high hurdles in :19.0 and the 300 intermediate hurdles in :30.5. Bordi finished sixth in the long jump with a 12-7.75 effort.

Catherine Grosjacques came in a few steps behind Bordi, finishing fourth in the 200 in :30.9 and fourth in the 300 hurdles in :59.68. Kristen Bull was fifth in the discus with a 68-3.5 toss.

Friday Harbor is closer to home Friday, April 7 – they travel to Lopez.

Wolverine boys best Class A foes
at LaConner meet

Friday Harbor coach Greg Hertel hoped his boys squad could place high against the other Class A schools at the Northwest Preview in the LaConner March 23, but his crew had other plans -- they beat won the meet's A title.

The team's 1,600-meter relay team of Leo Sooter, Troy Sullivan, Devan Wilson and Tyler Gilfilian clinched the honor by finishing third with a four-minute, eight-second time -- two seconds ahead of Snohomish County Christian.

Friday Harbor dominated the mid-places and tallied 68 team points, good for a second-place finish. Mount Vernon Christian, a Class B school with ample numbers, won the meet with 132 points. The other schools, their classes and scores are: Concrete (A) 66; LaConner (A) 63; Coupeville (A) 54; Archbishop Thomas Murphy (A) 34; Snohomish County Christian (B) 34; Arlington Christian (B) 20; Lopez (B) 12; and Grace Academy (B) 6.

Nathan Smith continued to post decent marks for a rookie. The freshman finished second in the triple jump by bounding 47 feet, inches; placed third in the long jump with a 17-3 effort; took another third by throwing the discus 100-7; and came in forth in the high jump with a 5-4 leap.

Wilson notched the Wolverines other second place by running the 800 in 2:15.

Sooter scooted to a 24.4-second third-place finish in the 200 dash and finished fourth in the 100 with a 12.2 time. Gilfilian placed third in the 400 in 57.4.

Three Wolverines posted sixth-place efforts: Eric Kristenson in the 100 and 400; Patterson in the triple jump; and Sam Barnhart in the 3,200.

In girls action, Jenny Bordi cleared a third place in the 300 hurdles in 59.4 for the Wolverines, and was fifth in the 100 hurdles in 21.1 Catherine Grosjacques finished fifth in the 200 in 30.9 and Nicole Garcia was sixth in the 100 hurdles in 21.2.

Smith makes high mark in 1st meet;
Bull sisters dual in sprints

Friday Harbor freshman Nathan Smith leaped 18 feet, seven inches, finishing 1.5 inches short of a first-place in his debut high school track and field meet. He also placed third in the high jump and fourth in the triple jump during at a Northwest A League Season Opener in Coupeville.

Smith cleared the high jump bar at 5-4 and bounded 32-8.5 in the triple jump.

Leo Sooter also came close to a win. He completed the 100-meter dash in 12.3 seconds, one-tenth of a second behind winner John Orange of Mount Vernon Christian. Sooter also finished second in the 200-meter dash in 24.7 seconds.

Other individual results for Friday Harbor are: 800-meter run - 5. Devan Wilson, 2:20.6, 1,600-meter run - 5. Wilson, 5:18.2; 3,200-meter run - 6. Sam Barnhardt, 14:05.5; triple jump - 6. Mahius Concord 25-9.

The Wolveirnes' 400-meter relay team came in second and the 1,600-meter team placed fourth in 4:00.7.

The Friday Harbor boys earned 68 points and a fourth-place. Other team points are: 1. Mount Vernon Christian 140; Archbishop Thomas Murphy 85; Concrete 75; Coupeville 66; LaConner 52.

In girls action, the Bull sisters battled neck-and-neck in the 100- meter and 200-meter sprints, but Marina edged her older sister Kristen at the tape. They both recorded times of 14.3 in the 100, good for fourth and fifth. They also matched times of 30.2 the 200, in which they finished third and fourth.

Jenny Bordi finished fourth in the 300 hurdles in 1:02.2 and fifth in the 100 hurdles in 21.5.

Girls team places and scores are: 1. Mount Vernon Christian 212; 2. Coupeville 69; 3. Concrete 52.5; 4. LaConner 47; 5. Archbishop Thomas Murphy 42; 6. Friday Harbor 30.5.
