Smith adapts, wins high jump
and javelin at Bi-District

Nathan Smith, recovering from a leg injury a year ago, was unable to compete in his specialties -- the long jump and triple jump -- at the Class A Bi-District Meet Saturday, May 12 at La Conner. The Friday Harbor sophomore adjusted, though, winning the high jump and javelin. He and 18 other Friday Harbor track team members advance to the state-qualifying Tri-District Championships at King’s Saturday, May 19.

Friday Harbor’s boys finished second with 96 points. Archbishop Murphy won the meet with 174 points. Other team totals were: University Prep 84, Coupeville 84, La Conner 73, Concrete 36 and Northwest School 2.

Smith leaped five feet, 10 inches in the high jump and thrust the javelin 158-4. He also finished third in the discus with a 114-9 toss and fourth in the shot with a 38-3.5 effort.

Senior Leo Sooter finished second in 100-meter dash and 200 sprint in :11.7 and :24.2. Fellow senior Shane Coulter placed second in the discus with a 115-2 fling and also was runner-up in the javelin with a 152-7 performance. Ian Paterson gained a silver finish with a 37-6 leap in the triple jump.

The Wolverines’ 4x100 relay squad of William Cobos, Sooter, Chad Cymbalista and Travis Heim placed second, with a :46.7 time – a half second behind winner University Prep. Friday Harbor’s 4x400 relay team of Travis Coulter, John Marsh, Paterson and Cymbalista finished third in 3:58.

Adrian Kilpatrick completed the Wolverines’ sweep of the top three javelin spots with a 145-11 throw.

Fourth-place finishes for the Wolverines were: Paterson, long jump, 17-3; Cymbalista, 200 dash, :11.7; and Drew Allen, discus, 104.

Marsh, in the high jump, and Cymbalista in the 200, finished fifth and narrowly missed qualifying for Tri-District.

Wolverine girls relay teams keep clipping off ticks

Friday Harbor girls 4x100- and 4x200-meter relay teams of Marina Bull, Catherine GrosJaques, Krysta Brem and Tessa Gilfillan continued improving, finishing first at the Bi-District Meet in La Conner, Saturday, May 12.

The Wolverines came in third in team totals, scoring 76 points. Archbishop Murphy won with 129 and La Conner was second with 94. Other team scores were: Coupeville 57, University Prep 55 and Northwest School 18.

Friday Harbor zipped to a 53.2-second finish in the 4x100 and a 1:59 time in the 4x200.

Karen Morrill thrust the javelin 94 feet, 11 inches, eclipsing her previous mark by 16 feet and finishing second. She also earned a second in the long jump with a 13-6.75 effort.

Bull bustled to second-places in the 100 and 200 dashes in :13.8 and :29.2.

GrosJaques cleared 4-4 and was third in the high jump.

The Wolverines 4x400 relay team of Lee, Leggett, Davies and Miller finished third.

Brem qualified for the long jump with 12-5.25 fourth-place leap and was fifth in the triple jump. Gilfillan finished fifth in the discus.

Friday Harbor boys place second
at conference championships

Friday Harbor’s boys track team posted four first-place finishes in a team runner-up outing at the Northwest A League Meet Thursday, May 5 in Coupeville.

Archbishop Murphy won the meet with 127 points. The Wolverines, with 109, easily out-distanced the other squads: La Conner had 62, Concrete 39 and Coupeville 10.

Senior Shane Coulter, ranked fourth in Class A in the javelin, continued his strong throwing, winning the event with a 157-4 fling. Coulter tossed the discus 119-8.5 for a second place and leaped 17-5 in the long jump for a third.

Chad Cymbalista won the 100-meter sprint in 11.6 seconds, John Marsh zipped to a :56.15 first-place finish in the 400. Friday Harbor’s 4 x 100 relay team of William Cobos, Cymbalista, Jesse Kjolso and Leo Sooter edged La Conner at the tape at :47.25.

Wolverine girls 400 relay squad wins league title

Finishing nearly five seconds before the runner-up, the Friday Harbor girls 4 x 100-meter relay team of Marina Bull, Catherine GrosJaques, Tessa Gilfillan, Krysta Brem zoomed to a 54.69-second win at the Northwest A League Meet Thursday, May 1.

The Wolverine 4 x 200 squad of GrosJaques, Gilfillan, Brem and Karen Morrill finished first in 2:00.47.

Bull sprinted to second-place finishes in the 100, 200 and 400 with :13.72, :28.99 and 2:10.24 efforts.

Archbishop Murphy won the meet with 106 points, La Conner was second with 87 and Friday Harbor third with 61. Coupeville had 48 and Concrete 27.

Large Wolverine pack routs Lobos on track

A deep Friday Harbor boys track team easily out-distanced the Lopez Lobos 94-37 Tuesday, May 1. The Wolverines won all but two events in the dual meet.

First-place finishers for the Wolverines were:

  • 110 Hurdles - Jesse Kjolso :19.23;

  • 100 - Chad Cymbalista :12.44;

  • 400 Relay - Friday Harbor :48.77;

  • 400 - John Marsh :56.97;

  • 300 Hurdles - Kjolso :49.65;

Jason Buffum won the shot put with a 39-11 heave for the Lobos and B. Batway finished first in the 1600 run in 5:26.97.

Wolverine girls beat Lobos

Tessa Gilfillan won the 100 and 300 hurdles as Friday Harbor girls track team defeated Lopez 66-41 Tuesday, May 5.

Event winners for the Wolverines are:

Tyler Gilfillan posts PR in shot

Tyler Gilfillan put the shot a personal record and Chad Cymbalista continued his speedy times in the dashes as Friday Harbor boys track team won a four-way meet April 21 at Coupeville.

Friday Harbor tallied 98 points, Archbishop Murphy 81, Concrete 30 and Coupeville 18.

Gilfillan heaved the shot 40 feet, three-quarter inch. Cymbalista won the 100-, 200- and 400 sprints. Shane Coulter finished first in the discus with a 109-1 toss and the javelin with a 130-4 throw.

Cymbalista, Gilfillan, William Cobos and Leo Sooter ran on the Wolverines' 400 relay team, which won in 48.1 seconds. Gilfillan, Cymbalista, Shane Coulter and Travis Coulter raced on the Friday Harbor's first-place 1,600 relay squad, which finished in 3:55.7.

Travis Coulter placed second in the 800 and Cobos was the 200 runner-up.

Bull bounds to four first-place finishes

Marina Bull zipped to victories in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter sprints and helped propel the Friday Harbor girls track team to a 400 relay win April 12 in Coupeville.

The Wolverines scored 76 points and finished second in the Northwest A League. Archbishop Murphy won with 87, Coupeville 34 and Concrete 2.

Bull finished the 100 in 13.72 seconds, 200 in :29.44 and the 400 in 1:12.31.

Friday Harbor's 800 relay squad of Catherine GrosJacques, Karen Morrill, Krysta Brem and Tessa Gilfillan also won.

Second-place finishers are: 100 hurdles, Gilfillan; 300 hurdles Erika Lee; discus, Brandie Miller; triple jump, Brem; and 200, GrosJacques.

Friday Harbor boys track squad finishes second

The Wolverine boys track team posted five first-place finishes and came in second at a five-way meet at Everett Stadium, Saturday, March 31.

Chad Cymbalista continued his strong performances in the sprints, winning the 100-meter in 11.96 seconds and the 200-meter in :24.48 and anchoring the Wolverines' first-place 400 relay team. That squad of Cymbalista, William Cobos, Leo Sooter and John Marsh won in :47.89. Tyler Gilfillan put the shot 39 feet, 7.75 inches and Shane Coulter thrust the javelin 144-8, both first-place performances.

Other Friday Harbor results are: High Jump - 2. Marsh 5-0, 3. S. Coulter 5-0. 100 - 2. Cobos :12.29; Shot Put - 4. Trevor Owen-DeVries 33-5.5; 300 Hurdles - 3. T. Coulter :53.50; Long Jump - 3. S. Friday Harbor's Bull scores hat trick in dashes

Marina Bull dominated the sprints, winning the 100-meter, 200 and 400 and ran a leg on the Wolverines' first-place 400 relay squad during a five-team meet at Everett Stadium, Saturday, March 31.

Bull blasted to these finishes: 100, 13.8 seconds; 200, 20.56; and 400, 1:11.96. The Wolverine 400 relay team of Bull, Catherine GrosJacques and Karen Morrill circled the track in :57.12.

GrosJacques leaped four feet in the high jump, placing second. She was fourth in the 100 in :14.50 and fourth in the 200 with a :29.90 effort.

Other Friday Harbor results are: Javelin - 3. Morrill 63-1; 400 - 3. Michelle Wright 1:18.50; Long Jump - 3. Morrill 12-11.5; 100 Hurdles - 4. T. Gilfillan :20.70; Discus - 4. T. Gilfillan 71-2; Shot Put - 6. Wright 20-3.5; Long Jump - 6. Wright 11-2.5; and cleared 12-11 in the long jump, both thirds.

Host Archbishop Murphy won the meet with 179 points. La Conner finished second with 96 and Friday Harbor third with 84. Coupeville had 45 and Grace Academy 18.

With construction of a new track and stadium lights, Friday Harbor High School begins hosting track meets again. Volunteers -- veterans or rookies -- are needed to help with the new track's debut meet on Friday, March 16 and meets on April 6 and 26. Please call Athletic Director Cal Johnson at 360.378.5215 and indicate the dates of availability and positions desired -- finish line or field events.
