State Parks recruiting marine park hosts

Washington State Parks is looking for people who love exploring the waterways with their boats to volunteer as hosts at marine parks this summer. In exchange for serving a minimum of two weeks (28 hours per week), marine park hosts receive free moorage, use of the park and are covered by Labor and Industries for job-related medical costs.

The hosts assist park managers by greeting boaters, furnishing maps and monitoring moorage self-registration. In addition, they teach park visitors how to use specialized marine facilities, help with interpretive information, clean campsites, pick up litter and alert rangers to potential problems. State Parks staff will train hosts.

Five state parks participate in the program.

  • At Blake, Jones and Stuart Islands, hosts are responsible for their own overnight boating accommodations.

  • At Mystery Bay near Fort Flagler State Park and at Cornet Bay in Deception Pass State Park, hosts are responsible for their own overnight RV or boating accommodations.

Some utilities are available but vary from site to site.

Hosts are needed from:

  • March through December at Cornet Bay

  • April through September at Blake Island

  • April through October at Mystery Bay

  • June through September at Jones and Stuart Islands.

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission manages a diverse system of more than 120 parks and several recreation programs, including boating, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. The 90-year-old park system turns 91 March 19 and celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2013.
