Ferry ridership numbers go down

Washington State Ferries ridership figures for 2002, 2003 and 2004 show a decrease in overall ridership and an increase in use of commuter tickets. WSF officials have stated the decreases are less than expected after the fare increases.
Ridership statistics for the last three years are available on the Washington State Ferries Web site.

Trip completion statistics: In 2002 Washington State Ferries completed 24,417 out of 24,432 scheduled trips for Anacortes/San Juan Islands. Of the 94 canceled trips, 77 were due to vessels, six because of emergencies, two for service, nine for other reasons. WSF replaced 79 of the canceled trips for a completion rate of 99.94 percent. In 2001 the completion rate was 99.56 percent.
Use of coupon books: In 2002, use of coupon tickets for the Anacortes/Friday Harbor route increased 23.3 percent. For the Anacortes/Orcas Island route the increase was 19.6 percent; for Anacortes/Lopez the increase was 8.9 percent; and the increase was 11.3 percent for the Anacortes/Shaw route.
Ridership statistics: For 2002, total riders for the Washington State Ferry system dropped 3.7 percent. In the San Juans the number dropped 0.5 percent. The number of vehicles decreased 2.5 percent system-wide compared to an increase of 0.6 percent in the San Juans. The table below shows the statistics for 2001 and 2002 for the San Juans.
For the first quarter of 2003, total ridership system-wide dropped 6.3 percent. In the San Juans, total ridership decreased 1.7 percent. The number of vehicles system-wide decreased 4 percent, in the San Juans the number of vehicles decreased 0.4 percent.
