Broadband forum set for Thursday

posted 04/11/01
County-wide DSL, wireless broadband communication, fiber-optic cable and enhanced cable services are in various stages of development in San Juan County. A discussion on "Telecommunications, Tele-learning and Telework: The Three Legged Stool" will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 12 in KeyBank's Garden Room in Friday Harbor. Tom Campbell, Executive Director of SnoNet in Everett will be the guest speaker. He will share his expertise in developing formal consortium agreements to unleash the promise of broadband across the county.

This will be the third discussion hosted by Island District Economic Development Council. During previous brownbag lunches plans for technological infrastructure improvements were revealed. :

  • Rock Island plans to offer wireless internet service.

  • OPALCO and Bonneville Power Administration plan to deploy new power/fiber optic cable to mainland this summer.

  • Century Telephone plans to offer DSL for $39.95 per month as early as June.

  • Adelphia plans to deploy 15 miles of fiber across San Juan Island this summer.

Topics during the open discussion may include:

  • How does San Juan County prepare?

  • How do private and public sector interests build consortia to really put this new infrastructure to work?

  • What's your unique role in the year ahead?

  • What are the opportunities for business, education, healthcare, government and public safety?
