TOWN OF FRIDAY HARBOR

Council asked to ban Bush-bashing signs

posted 09/20/04
Offended by a F*** BUSH bumper sticker, San Juan Island resident Harry Kuhein presented a petition to the Friday Harbor Town Council asking that "obscene language should be banned from all vehicles in San Juan County." Councilmember Wally Gillette said, "I agree with you 100 percent."

Gillette suggested Town Code Enforcement Officer John Jensen could use the town's public nuisance ordinance and approach people who had the signs or bumperstickers displayed. He could tell them "Under our rules of public nuisance and common morality in the town and for the sake of decency remove the obscene sticker," Gillette said.

Councilmember Howie Rosenfeld suggested the town could adopt an ordinance or resolution stating: While we recognize rights and privileges, we hereby urge political expression be done in a civil manner and to community standards."

Councilmember David Jones said, "The less said about it the better. There is a is community standard for taste and decorum that won't be enhanced by anything we do."

No motion was made and the matter was dropped.
