Labbies raise $3,000 for fire victims

posted 06/06/02
Friday Harbor Laboratories raised more than $3,000 in contributions from staff, students and researchers at the Labs to help the victims and families of the fire that destroyed businesses last month.

Contributions ranged from $1.00 from a student who apologized that they couldn't afford to give more to an anonymous contribution of $2,000 towards tuition to a child of a family affected by the fire.

Dennis Willows, director of Friday Harbor Laboratories said, "The University has been a member of the community in Friday Harbor for nearly a century, having been founded in 1904. As long time members of the community we care about the people and local businesses. Many Labbies are now indistinguishable from the true 'old-timers'."

Willows also added that they are trying to arrange a fund raising concert for later in the summer to raise more money for the fire victims.

Sweet thanks for firefighters

posted 05/14/02
Friday Harbor firefighters gathered for a debriefing Monday night, received a sweet surprise -- a special delivery of Krispy Kreme donuts. The owners of the Hungry Clam and San Juan Florist presented boxes of the donuts as a thank you to the firefighters for their work on the May 9, 2002 fire. Krispy Kreme donated the donuts after being contacted by the owners.

"I've never had a Krispy Kreme before," said Fire Chief Bob Low. The donuts aren't available on San Juan Island.

After hugs and applause, the group moved on to deliver donuts to the sheriff's office and Fire District No. 3 firefighters.
