Friday Harbor 'Toilet Tax' signed into law04/00
Councilwoman Vonda Sheiman told the council at their Thursday, April 6 meeting Governor Locke had signed the "Friday Harbor Bill" as it's known in Olympia into law Friday, March 31. "I've heard it's called the 'Friday Harbor toilet tax'," said Town Administrator King Fitch. The legislation, Senate Bill 6732, adds a new section to a previous law dealing with allowable uses of hotel/motel tax money. The section states: Nothing in chapter 452, Laws of 1997, or chapter 35, Laws of 1998, is intended to disallow any use or purpose permitted under section 1, chapter 290, Laws of 1994 as long as the use or purpose was proposed by the local government, but not implemented by May 20, 1997. The law may not look like much but it means a lot to the Town of Friday Harbor. The town had planned on using some of the 2 percent hotel/motel money to pay for improvements to the waste water treatment plant. However, when the law was rewritten in 1997 and 1998, it took away that option. The new law gives the option back. The law becomes effective June 8, 2000. |
