Friday Harbor's new fire engine arrived on island yesterday afternoon (Nov. 7, 2000). According to Fire Chief Bob Low, the $472,000 rig is both an aerial and a pumper. The 65-foot aerial will allow firefighters to fight fires from above. They will be able to ventilate structures without having to set foot on a roof. Engine 7 has a lighting package which will light up the whole scene for firefighters. The engine has remote control capabilities which will allow firefighters to stay back from dangerous situations such as a propane fire and still fight fires.
