Whole lot of building going on

posted 07/26/01
Several large building projects are underway in Friday Harbor. Construction workers with help from their dog worked on Sam and Barbara Buck's new commercial building on Tucker Street. The approximately 6,000 square foot structure will be used as storage units. .

Churchill Court, owned by Christensen Court LLC, won't be having underground parking. According to town staff, the builder ran into more rock than expected. The retail and office complex will have 4,306 square feet on the ground floor and 2,902 square feet on the second floor. The building is located on the corner of A and Nichols Streets behind historic Churchill Square building

Browne Lumber's new building is under construction on Mullis Avenue. The commercial building will have 16,000 square feet on the first floor. The mezzanine level will be approximately 2,788 square feet. As a comparison Market Place is 27,000 square feet.

Another project in the planning stages is John Dunning's plan to build six detached homes on the lot at the corner of Park and Guard Streets (across from San Juan Island Library).

Correction: an earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the Browne's Lumber building.

Changes in the works for town landmark

The blueprint shows the elevation from A Street

posted 05/15/01
Churchill Court, a new retail office complex, is planned in the empty lot at the corner of Nichols and A streets in Friday Harbor. A small part of the existing Churchill Square building (the yellow house on the corner of Harrison and A Streets) will have to be removed before the new building can be occupied. The entire landmark building will be demolished or moved when the second building in the three-part complex is built.

Plans for the first of the three buildings were presented to Friday Harbor Historic Preservation Board last week. Review by the preservation board is required before a building permit can be obtained. Compliance with the board's recommendations is voluntary.

The plans for Building A, drawn up by architect John Gresseth, show a 13 car underground parking lot, 3,728 square feet of retail space on the first level and 2,347 square feet of office space on the second level.

Plans for the future construction of Building B and Building C were not presented for review. The buildings were referred to in the blueprints. Building B would have retail space facing Harrison Street on the lowest level, restaurant and retail space on the main level and professional offices and a residential unit on the upper level. Building C would have retail on the main level, and professional offices and a residential unit on the upper level.
